Today we’d like to introduce you to Ophelia Gilstrap.
Hi Ophelia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always believed that motherhood can feel both beautiful and isolating, sometimes in the very same moment. When my oldest was eight weeks old, I joined a FIT4MOM class in California simply hoping to move my body and meet one mom who “got it.” What I found was a community that changed everything for me. It was the first place I felt seen, supported, and let me know that I wasn’t meant to do motherhood alone.
When my family moved to Colorado in 2020, I realized just how much that kind of space was missing. I didn’t know a single mom here, and the pandemic made connection even harder. So after a lot of planning and a huge leap of faith, I started FIT4MOM St. Vrain Valley — not just to recreate what I once had, but to build something even stronger, rooted in empowerment, consistency, and real community for local moms.
We started with just a handful of moms in a park, and over the years we’ve grown into a thriving village offering stroller classes, mom-only strength programs, Run Club, prenatal classes, events, and so much more. I’ve built this business between naps, school pick-ups, late nights, and all the chaos of raising two boys — and it continues to grow because our moms keep showing up for themselves and each other.
Today, FIT4MOM St. Vrain Valley is one of Colorado’s most community-driven, mom-focused fitness programs, and I’m proud of the culture we’ve created: welcoming, strong, fun, real, and truly life-changing. My journey started with needing community, and now I get to help hundreds of moms find theirs. It’s the best part of my job.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all — but I think the challenges have shaped me into a better leader and made our community stronger.
Starting a business in a brand-new state during a pandemic was definitely not a smooth road. I launched without knowing a single local mom, without family nearby, and without the safety net most new business owners lean on. Every part of growing FIT4MOM St. Vrain Valley — from finding rental spaces to building trust, to navigating unpredictable weather and mom-life schedules — required creativity, flexibility, and a lot of grit.
Running a community-centered business also means working with people’s real lives: sleep deprivation, childcare changes, job transitions, pregnancies, postpartum healing, illness, and the emotional load that comes with motherhood. Building systems that support moms while also running a sustainable business has been one of my biggest and most important challenges.
I’ve also faced interpersonal challenges along the way — navigating team dynamics, leadership growth, and difficult decisions that come with protecting the emotional safety of my community. Some seasons have been deeply rewarding, and some have been deeply painful. But every challenge has clarified what matters most: creating a space where moms feel safe, seen, and supported.
There have been highs and lows, smooth seasons and messy ones — but I’m grateful for all of it. Those struggles pushed me to refine our programs, strengthen our culture, and build the kind of village I once needed as a new mom.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I own FIT4MOM St. Vrain Valley, where I get to combine two things I love most: fitness and supporting moms. My work is all about creating a space where moms can move their bodies, connect with each other, and feel like themselves again — even on the days when nothing feels put together.
What I actually do day-to-day is a mix of coaching classes, training instructors, planning programs, building community events, and making sure moms always feel welcomed the minute they show up. No two days look the same, and that’s part of what I love about it.
What I specialize in is making fitness work for real mom-life. Our classes are designed for moms with strollers, moms without strollers, pregnant moms, working moms, stay-at-home moms — truly anyone who needs a place to feel strong and supported. I’m known for fun, effective workouts and a coaching style that’s upbeat, encouraging, and very real.
What sets me apart is the heart behind what I do. I’m not just running workouts — I’m building a village. I’ve been the lonely new mom searching for community, and that fuels every decision I make. I care deeply about making sure moms leave feeling better than they came, both physically and emotionally.
What I’m most proud of is the culture we’ve created. Moms tell us that FIT4MOM has changed their life, helped them find friends, or given them confidence again — and that means everything to me. Seeing women show up for themselves and for each other is truly the best part of my
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
People are always surprised when they find out how introverted I actually am. I teach high-energy classes and lead a big community, but I recharge best with quiet, cozy time with my family.
