Today we’d like to introduce you to Phenix Durham.
Hi Phenix, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always loved taking photos. My journey with photography started out with a love for landscapes and being outside. I loved showing my family photos of the places I had been in Colorado, capturing my dog exploring the outdoors, or snapping some action shots of my little sister playing soccer.
Fast forward a few years and I am about to be at one of my college teammates’ weddings back in North Carolina. I was amazed at the way the photographer led the group and seemingly went unseen as she captured the special moments of my friend and her now husband. I knew as soon as I got home that I needed to get people in front of my camera, more importantly, I wanted to capture emotions and moments.
I connected through Facebook offering free photo sessions and watched every YouTube video possible on the style of photography I was going for. I was blessed enough to make some incredible connections including one photographer out of Denver, Lydia Peyton, who has now become a friend.
Lydia allowed me to join her for an elopement to gain some experience and I was instantly in love with this line of work. I have taken every photo or video job that has come my way and I am happy to say the consistency is paying off. I love working with couples, connecting with brides, and delivering photos that help people hold onto the unseen moments.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road and it has taken a lot of dedication to push myself to produce better work and understand my camera in various lighting scenarios. Two of the biggest struggles along the way have been marketing myself to the right audience and believing that my hard work and consistency will pay off!
I focus on elopements, weddings, and couples photography and videography. My goal is to make couples comfortable in front of my camera and to encourage them to be themselves. When you can get a couple to break out of their shell and forget a camera is around, then you are able to capture the best moments. My favorite part of weddings and elopements is the un-staged and natural moments.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe risk-taking can bring you to the next level. While something may be daunting or unknown, you are going to learn a lot about yourself, and your business and continue to grow. My goal is to push my boundaries and learn as much as possible along the way!
