Today we’d like to introduce you to Piper Nunn.
Hi Piper, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My art journey began when I fell in love with fly-fishing. My art is largely inspired by the mountains, rivers, and beautiful fish. Immersing myself into these areas for fly fishing also created my love for art. I am also passionate about conservation and recently graduated with my bachelor’s in fisheries biology. I believe that art can make a difference in motivating and inspiring others to care about conservation and the protection of our natural world. 2 years ago I decided to make my art into a business, doing so while being in full-time college was a challenge, but my drive to create art for others and for myself pushed me forward. Fast forward to today and I am a recent college graduate and I am looking forward to taking the next step with growing my art business and creating more art to inspire others.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey with my art business has had its highs and lows and no shortage of hard days. I have been a full-time college student while trying to start and run my own business, that in itself has been a struggle as there are often not enough hours in the day. Recently graduated, I am now excited to have more time to dedicate to my art and my business. The struggle of pricing your art is also very difficult for a new artist, in addition to trying to reach and engage a large number of people and potential customers. Since the beginning, Instagram has been my biggest tool for promoting my art and my business, and every small business owner on Instagram knows that there are pros and cons of social media for a small business. At the end of the day, I have pushed through all of the struggles because making art and capturing the beauty of our fish, rivers, and natural world brings me happiness. The struggles are all a part of the learning process and I learn more each and every day, it is part of what makes this journey so rewarding.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in landscape and fish-themed art. This includes realistic fish paintings, fly paintings, and landscapes. However, my unique approach is painting mostly on wood instead of canvas. I use live-edge basswood as well as reclaimed pine beetle wood from Colorado as my canvas. My art has an incredibly natural feel, almost rustic at times, fitting well into cabins, mountain homes, and fishing lodges. The wood paintings set me apart from most fish artists, however, I am also proud of the level of detail that my paintings include. I pride myself in the tiny and intricate details in all of my pieces that really bring them to life. I also paint with vibrant colors to make the paintings stand out and to bring life into wherever they are hung!
Any big plans?
My plans for the future are to continue to grow my business as well as work with companies on art collaborations. Right now I am focused on increasing the amount of art that I create, continuing to grow as an artist, and networking to collaborate with different businesses on designs. I am also working to overlap my passion for art and my passion for conservation and the protection of our fisheries. I am planning on finding a way to give back to our rivers through my artwork. I am excited to see where my art journey takes me next and what the future has in store for me and my art business.
