Daily Inspiration: Meet Sandra Spence

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Spence.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I launched my career as an interior decorator in 2008 after taking a class on how to “read” the architecture of a home to determine the best place to put the furnishings. I was amazed at how this approached worked with all kinds of homes and styles, creating beautifully balanced, functional spaces without having to buy anything new. This insight sparked my passion for sustainable design, where refined aesthetic and affordability lead the way. Then, in 2013 I deepened my expertise by becoming certified in Kitchen and Bathroom design which lead me to a specialized niche: designing kitchens with used and repurposed cabinetry. My unique path has allowed me to blend creativity with environmental responsibility.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a business owner is never an easy road. It takes a lot of hard work, determination and investment of time to establish a functioning business and a solid reputation. Developing systems and having them in place to operate the business are ongoing challenges in this ever changing world. In the beginning my biggest personal hurdle was learning to recognize the value of my own time and skills. Over time, the consistent positive feedback from my clients and the visible impact of my work helped shift my mindset and keeps me moving forward as a business owner.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In home decorating I’m recognized for my ability to completely transform a space by rearranging the furniture, artwork and accessories that already exist in a home. I believe that most of us have everything we need to create a cohesive and peaceful space – sometimes we need a new eye to look at it in a different way. In kitchen design I’m know for designing dream kitchens using repurposed cabinetry to save homeowners money. My commitment to reusing and repurposing existing materials to create beauty, comfort, and a sense of renewal is a distinctive approach that truly sets my services apart. I’m most proud of having built a loyal base of repeat customers and generating consistent word-of-mouth referrals. It means that not only are clients satisfied with the quality of my work, but they also trust me enough to return and recommend my services to others.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was quiet and keenly aware of my surroundings and how they made me feel. I found joy in spending time alone in my bedroom, playing house, surrounded by soft yellow walls and a matching gingham check bedspread that wrapped me in a sense of warmth and comfort. I also loved the beauty of the outdoors and spent many hours riding my bicycle around the neighborhood feeling the sunshine on my face. Dancing was a from of self expression through movement which gave me an important connection with others and where I learned teamwork. Who I am at my core—a deeply feeling, sensitive, and creative person—is what has truly shaped me into the interior decorator and designer I am today.
