Daily Inspiration: Meet Scott DeHuff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott DeHuff.

Hi Scott, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I worked for several years in the food industry as a line worker up to general manager at companies like Chipotle and Quiznos.

Then in 2002, I made the change to media, and began working working at 104.3 The Fan in Denver.
Ran the board, produced #1 ranked shows like Schlereth and Evans, voiced sports updates, traffic reports, video and audio production, and an on-air comedy talent.

As the pandemic hit, I had to make a change that allowed me to be more focused and present with my family.

In 2021 that change was starting my own media company – DeHuff Studios LLC.

Now I’m hosting a #1 ranked comedy podcast in Colorado – DeHuff Uncensored, doing video & audio production, and even podcast consultation.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Getting sponsors for the show is always a challenge.

I have a great product that reaches a large amount of people, but that doesn’t mean it’s an easy sell.

While I’ve had many great sponsors and relationships with clients – Some potential sponsors want something for nothing, and some want to dictate my content in exchange for sponsorship. That’s not the right way to do things.

What I’ve learned the hard way is that sales is about a partnership. Equal respect will allow the relationship to flourish and be beneficial to all parties involved.

While this is indeed a challenge, overall I’m proud of the positive relationships that have developed with sponsors over the years.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I host Colorado’s #1 ranked comedy podcast via FeedSpot & consistently top 15 in the United States for Weird News podcast via Million Podcasts.

While it seems cliche to have a podcast as of late, I’ve been creating comedy focused content with the pod since 2021, and I’ve been in Denver media since 2002.

I’m known for my off-the-wall character voices like Connery DeHuff, Cowboy DeHuff, and many others. All of which interact on a regular basis with the show.

This allows the viewer/listener to experience news stories in a unique way. I can project an opinion on a story, then I can have Connery chime in with an over the line comment that most people are thinking, but are often scared to say out loud.
The characters can be my and your inner monolog.

I’m proud of my ability to stick with my personality. Not stealing from others or trying to fit a popular mold.
That’s what sets me apart from other shows.
I’m me. Silly, odd, awkward, and honest. I’m very proud of that.

And because of that, when I am telling the consumers about a sponsor, they understand that I am being honest with them.
I love my listeners/viewers, and I have an transparent relationship with them.

So whether I’m giving a reaction to a funny story or telling them about a great product, they know it’s genuine.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Biggest advice I wish I knew would be to slow down. Take a moment, step back from the show.
Don’t rush with getting a show up and out there. Polish it. Don’t be afraid to click delete and record it again.

That’s the benefit of doing a recorded podcast versus a live radio/tv/podcast show.
If I’m thinking I could do better, then restart.

With my format, that makes sense. It has the feel of a live show, free flowing, so it’s not highly produced. I’ve done a complete show and thought I could do better – so I did.
I want the consumer of my show (my product) to be satisfied. And I think sometimes I would forget about that in the beginning.
