Daily Inspiration: Meet Sharon Mendoza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Mendoza.

Sharon Mendoza

Hi Sharon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started photography in high school because of baseball. After high school, I began to focus on landscape photography, and started taking pictures of the city as well as nature anytime I went hiking. In 2023, I got the opportunity to start shooting sports, freelancing with an MLS team, it was a lot of learning, and having to not be as shy due to being around a lot of people but it has been a fun journey!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
COVID was a big challenge for me, my camera broke right before everything shut down, and being stuck inside did not help either. Not knowing what is next was one of my biggest struggle, and still is to this day. I want to always try out new things when it comes to photography, but so far sports has been my favorite.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Being a woman in sports has been something I’m most proud of, especially a photographer. From my experience, I believe that you don’t see many women on the sidelines taking pictures. It’s always good to break a stereotype, and be part of a percentage of women that works in a male dominated industry.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Deciding to stick to photography after high school was a big risk I took, because I started it as a hobby and I decided to want to make a career out of it later on. Becoming a freelancer as well, was tough because I wasn’t sure if it would lead me anywhere or to new opportunities.
