Hi Shelissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Shelissa, a self-taught artist based in Denver, Colorado, and the creative force behind Ebony By Design. I launched Ebony By Design to bring unique, vibrant, and expressive art to homes and businesses, offering a fresh and soulful approach to abstract art. My journey began with a passion for exploring unconventional techniques and materials—allowing color, texture, and emotion to merge into one-of-a-kind pieces that embody authenticity and innovation.
After taking time to raise my family, I returned to my lifelong passion with renewed purpose, proving that dreams can be realized through commitment and perseverance at any stage in life. Through my art, I aim to inspire creativity, connection, and the belief that art has the power to transform both spaces and perspectives.
As Ebony By Design continues to grow, my goal remains the same—to create art that resonates deeply, celebrates individuality, and brings people together through the beauty of abstract expression.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building Ebony By Design has been both a rewarding and challenging journey. As a self-taught artist and single mother, one of my biggest obstacles was balancing my creative goals with the responsibilities of raising my children and managing everyday life. Time, resources, and energy were often limited, but my passion for art kept me motivated to continue growing and creating.

Another major challenge was learning the business side of art. Turning creativity into a sustainable business required me to understand marketing, pricing, branding, and customer engagement — all while staying true to my artistic vision. I had to learn how to promote my work, build an online presence, and navigate the financial realities of entrepreneurship without losing the authenticity that defines Ebony By Design.

Access to materials and exposure also posed difficulties. As an independent artist, I often had to be resourceful — experimenting with affordable supplies, researching new techniques, and finding local opportunities to showcase my work. Each obstacle pushed me to become more innovative and self-reliant.

Despite these challenges, every setback became a lesson in persistence and creativity. Ebony By Design is more than just an art business — it’s a reflection of resilience, passion, and the belief that art can inspire connection and transformation.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create vibrant, one-of-a-kind abstract art through my business, Ebony By Design. My work focuses on color, movement, and emotion — using mediums like acrylic and alcohol ink on plexiglass to bring energy and life into any space.

I’m most proud of how my art connects with people and sparks conversation. Each piece is completely original and created with intention — no reproductions, just authentic expression. What sets me apart is my unique process and passion for turning imagination into something that feels alive and meaningful.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up in Northglenn, Colorado, where my parents owned a daycare. From a young age, I learned what it takes to run a business — the challenges, the hard work, and the rewards that come with dedication. I was always a child who loved to create, drawn to making things that were unique and didn’t always follow the crowd. That love of creativity and individuality eventually led me to start Ebony By Design, where I could turn my passion for original art into a business that reflects who I am.
