Today we’d like to introduce you to Siouxsie Cupcakes.
Hi Siouxsie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started burlesque back in 2015. After a few years of performing my partner at the time had an emergency health situation and have to go to the ER. He didn’t have insurance. His ex-wife and I then banded together and produced a fundraiser show. We ended up getting him enough money to help pay his rent. After that, we decided to keep producing. Thus Rebel Girl Productions was born. We produced until last year.
All along the way fighting for inclusive spaces! Now, I am currently producing a monthly show called Irreverent Cabaret with a different friend, Rose West. Irreverent Cabaret is a space for people to grow and get stage time. We felt the burlesque community needed a sort of open stage for people to come and create.
We give space to all bodies and many different types of performance. Just like Rebel Girl, we strive to have an inclusive safe space for all different races, body types, and experience levels.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was been ok. There are always struggles to get support when you are trying to break the mold. I have struggled to find inclusive spaces and have struggled with other producers casting choices (in terms of inclusivity).
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I started performing burlesque but I also do drag (as a drag king, Vicious Pryce. I am also the current reining Mister Eggplant 2023). I think I generally specialize in doing things a bit dark, comedic, and always a little weird. I think that is what I am most known for. I also produce shows. I hope that I am known for having inclusive casting and trying hard to always do and be better. I always try to take care of my performers. I try to have different shows than what is going on in Denver currently.
I like to do some out-of-the-box types of shows. I did a show called Siouxsie’s Deathmatch. Which was a competition show, we silly off-the-wall categories and trophies I make myself. With Rebel Girl, we produced some live band shows. We would have a band play their set and during a few of their songs, different burlesque performers would come out and do an act to their songs. I’m always striving to create a unique and fun experience for my crowds and performers.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
A compassionate heart. Prioritizing being a good ally and person.
To truly listen to other people and what they need in their art spaces. To listen to and honor people for their vulnerability and art. Also not being afraid to take a chance and make it weird.
