Daily Inspiration: Meet Sydney Shay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Shay.

Hi Sydney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into cosmetology began a little differently than most. During my senior year of high school, I was given the opportunity to enroll in cosmetology school. At the time, my plan was to complete hair school and then attend a “traditional” college, viewing hair as something I would do temporarily. That perspective shifted very quickly within my first few months of school.

I fell in love with the creativity of the industry and, even more so, the genuine connections it allowed me to build with people. The ability to help someone feel confident and seen through my work was incredibly fulfilling. After graduating, I jumped in head first at a small salon on the coast of Florida, where I quickly realized how much depth this industry truly has.

There was a steep learning curve, but I was deeply committed to growing my skills behind the chair and providing the level of care and quality I knew I was capable of. Through consistent growth, continued education, and a lot of dedication over the years, I’m now grateful to be a successful independent hairstylist, hair extension educator, and trusted care provider to many incredible clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. When you’re truly passionate about what you do, that passion often comes with added pressure. I’ve had to work through perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and the constant questioning of whether every small detail is just right.

Putting your heart and soul into your work can bring anxiety, but it’s also been one of my greatest teachers. Over the past ten years, I’ve learned that growth comes from practicing, trusting yourself, and not being afraid to try, even when it feels uncomfortable. Those challenges have shaped both my confidence and my approach to caring for my clients.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
While I enjoy many aspects of the industry, my main specialties are hair color and extensions. From lived-in blondes to bold, creative rainbow hair, I truly love the full spectrum of transformation.

What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. Creating a space where people feel comfortable, heard, and confident is at the core of everything I do. Helping someone feel like the best version of themselves, inside and out, is what I hold closest to my heart, and it’s what continues to inspire me every day behind the chair.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’d simply like to say thank you for this opportunity. I’m incredibly grateful to be able to do what I love, and I look forward to continuing to connect, create, and hopefully welcome some of you into my chair in the future.
