Daily Inspiration: Meet Tyrone Basket

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyrone Basket.

Hi Tyrone, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been a fan of music. There was always something playing in my house growing up. From the classic rock hits and 80s jams my parents would play to the vast library of hip-hop I kept on my iPod, music was always something I gravitated to. However, it wasn’t until I went to college that I began listening to electronic music and immersing myself in the scene. As soon as I went to my first show, I was hooked. I knew that somehow, someway, I wanted to be a part of this movement in music and culture. After years of attending festivals and shows, I finally came up with the idea to merge my journalism background with my love of music, and after two failed blogs and a bunch of brainstorming, The Daily Frequency was born. Instead of covering everything other electronic blogs covered, I decided to just cover music that I had a passion for, which happened to be primarily bass and dubstep.

I believe in any creative endeavor, whether it is writing, music, or art, it is essential to do what you want to do and not just what is popular at the time. Odds are there are plenty of people who similar interests. As The Daily Frequency began to grow, I began reaching out to upcoming artists in the scene. With Denver being such a hub for bass music, in particular, I figured it was the best place to start. From interviewing Denver artists like Hi Will, Contra Scandal, Subb Spaced, Yoko, and more to offering supporting coverage to events like the High Ground Music Festival, we really began to grow as a blog. The Daily Frequency is just now starting to get noticed by established artists in the bass scene, such as Manic Focus, Ill Gates, and Veil, among others. This is not only good for The Daily Frequency, but for the underground artists, I am lucky enough to interview and work with.

The Daily Frequency is still a work in progress, but my goal is to shed light on the bass scene, cover festival news and electronic music culture, and most importantly, provide a platform to all the incredibly talented artists that are unfortunately overlooked by mainstream publications. There is a revolution happening in electronic music, and our goal is to get everything about this movement out into the world.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road is never easy. There really isn’t a blueprint for running a successful music blog so everything we do is trial and error. From learning when and when not to post to building a website, understating analytics and SEO tactics, it is a never-ending learning process. Like in any endeavor, there is always going to be something that doesn’t work out the way you hope but the only thing you can do is learn from your mistakes and keep moving forward.

I’ve also struggled with the idea of being open with my friends and family about what I want to do with The Daily Frequency. For the first year or so I would hide the fact that I ran a blog for fear of what people may think. When taking the steps towards untraditional paths there is always the underlining thought of being judged which can become quite limiting at times. However, once I finally put myself and my blog out there a whole new world of possibilities opened up. Not caring what people think and being true to yourself is an essential aspects of achieving your goals. But of course, as I said before The Daily Frequency is a work in progress and I am nowhere near where I want to be, but I feel confident I am moving in the right direction.

At the end of the day, it’s all about having a strong support system to help you get through the challenges. That being said, I have to thank my girlfriend Sarah. Without her support and encouragement, The Daily Frequency would not be where it is today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the founder of The Daily Frequency, a music blog that covers everything from dubstep to house and everything in between. I write news articles, artist interviews and provide coverage for music festivals, tours, and more. On top of running The Daily Frequency, I am also a staff writer for iEDM.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is key. In my experience, you never know who you could meet that could change your trajectory. Be confident, kind, and listen. Even if you don’t end up working with a particular person, you never know what you can take away from a conversation. Also, don’t be afraid to reach out. The Daily Frequency would not be where it is today if I was afraid to ask an artist for an interview or a manager for a connection.
