Today we’d like to introduce you to Vidushi Goyal
Hi Vidushi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story with music started at the age of 11 when I began doing community theatre that my parents deemed would help me feel less self conscious. I had a strong affinity to music since I was born, but that is when I started digging into being a musician. I started western classical training at the age of 13 and continue to this day to keep my chops sharp. I attended Berklee College of Music for a year before dropping out to pursue songwriting in the great city of Los Angeles. I was young and naive and ended up moving back to my home state of Colorado to finish college where I graduated with a degree in Neuroscience. Years passed and music defaulted to a hobby until college was completed. The songs began to flow and the music would not cease. I wrote and wrote through the pandemic, had a brief stint of pursuing Medicine as a career, and finally ended up choosing to dedicate my life to being a musician. Mr. Knobs was born and with it came an influx of collaborators that have truly brought this project to life and where it is today. Working with people like Steve Lamos (American Football) and Sarah Hubbard (Flobots) has brought Mr. Knobs to a place I couldn’t have even imagined. It takes a village, and I feel like I have that and more helping Mr. Knobs dreams come true.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If the road was smooth, then the view probably wasn’t as good! The struggles I faced were internal mostly. I lacked self-confidence for a long time especially surrounding the music I was writing. I always felt assertive as a singer, but as a songwriter I felt more apprehensive. The struggle was to get out of my own way and feel comfortable in making art that I liked as an individual and letting the rest come as it did. Once I accepted what it meant to be a musician, and the insecurities that inevitably come, people began showing up and showing interest in what I was building.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in production and songwriting. I am also a proficient singer. I think what sets me apart is the multi-cultural aspect of my songwriting. The content in my songwriting is informed by my journey of being an immigrant from India and the challenges that I faced growing up in a white-dominated America. What make Mr. Knobs unique is that while the music is dense and complex, the beats and hooks are catchy and light. The contradiction of the progressive pop music paired with lyrics exploring topics such as capitalism, immigration, and truth, give us an edge. I am proud of how our sound has been forged and the direction we are going.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I learned a lot during the COVID-19 crisis. That was a very important time for me because it was the first time I started making decisions without fear. The intensity of the universal trauma we were all feeling helped me as an individual decide what was important for me with relative clarity. I did not want to wait any longer to pursue my dreams and it helped unlock a level of musicianship that I did not think was possible.
