Today we’d like to introduce you to Vinyl Nation Band Gen-X, 80s-90s Cover Band.
Hi Vinyl Nation Band, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
This band began roughly ten years ago under a different name. It was formed by four men in Highlands Ranch who wanted to get together and jam in a basement. One thing led to another and they began to play out in different venues. Our drummer is the only current member from that original lineup. Since then other members have come and gone, but the existing lineup has been together for over a year now. Two of our four members have been around as long as four-and-a-half years.
Over the past 5 years, the focus of the band has changed slightly. We’ve evolved into a cover band focused on mostly 80s-90s music played with energy. We want our audience to be entertained. It’s about the audience, not about us.
The unique aspect of our lineup is that we’re all either empty nesters or about to be empty nesters. A group of guys who are moving into the next phase of life with a passion for music and playing it for an audience. We also have a passion for not acting our age…
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are always struggles in a band dynamic. These need to be worked through and addressed as they arise. Music is very personal for many people. It’s even more personal for people who love to play it. This can challenge any band to find ways to move forward collectively with a common vision while resolving potential conflict diplomatically.
Over the past five years we’ve had two guitar players, three bass players and three lead singers. These transitions were significantly due to the dynamic mentioned above and unresolved differences. We’ve changed the original band name to Vinyl Nation and adjusted the focus of music we play, somewhat reinventing ourselves in the process. It is essential for us to look for ways to get along and sometimes look past individual desires as we keep an overall focus on the band vision as the priority. Every member needs to feel like they have a voice while being held accountable to what we’re trying to accomplish collectively.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Each member has a professional day job. We play music in our spare time because we love to do it. You might say that each of us personally feels like we have to do this. It’s just who we are.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
We’re all members of Generation X. We identify with many of the stereotypes of our generation and celebrate that generational culture. While we focus on Gen-X music, our intent is to entertain anyone we play for. The gratifying aspect of this is the feedback we get from all ages, including enthusiastic responses we receive from young people who also enjoy this music that stands the test of time.
We want the passion we feel about our music to translate into the audience’s experience. We’re having a blast! The audience needs to feel that too.
