Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Dew.

Hi Abigail, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Two things have always been important to my quality of life: operating my own business and community. I started my career working in the school district and studying to be a Special Education Teacher at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

Over time, I began providing respite care on the side to pay for school and to make rent. I strive to be the best that I can be at any task and quickly learned that caring for people with disabilities could be done better. I started caring for multiple people at once to support connections between them and their peers.

The demand for my services grew at a speed that I could not keep up with and I created Abby Dew For You as the solution.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest obstacles that I have faced is the tug between administrative work and hands-on work with the group.

I love my time with the group above all else and over time, I have had to be more intentional with my schedule so that I can have the maximum amount of time with the group while also completing work in the office. I have an amazing team who helps me balance and complete tasks so shout out to Hikiola, Morgan, and Dave!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Abby Dew For You?
Abby Dew For You provides social programs and community connections in Douglas County, Colorado. We offer opportunities for growing life skills, job skills, social skills, relationships, and independence. Our business is unique because of the community we have built and our dedication to keeping programs personal. Our mentor-to-group member ratio is 1 to 3 or 4 and our entire team knows everyone on our roster.

As we grow, we maintain close relationships and close communication with families above all else. We value supporting our group members past getting them out into the world – how can they thrive in the world? How can they have equity in the world? How can they enjoy the world? Be independent in the world? We provide this through different programs: “Adulting” day program, “Girls’ Day Out” social group for women, “Boy Meets World” social group for men, and “Dew Crew” social group for everyone.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
One of the risks I took with this business was using my reputation and name for branding. Hiring people that I can trust to show up the same way that I do is important to me because my reputation is on the line.

I am so grateful for my team’s dedication and integrity. They serve our group members with patience, respect, and kindness.
