Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I never really planned to make a career out of landscape installation, let alone becoming a small business owner. I started off working part time for my uncle who owned a landscape installation company while I was studying to become an electrician in CT. Very quickly I realized I didn’t want to be an electrician or live in CT. I absolutely fell in love with transforming outdoor living spaces. The concepts behind truly crafting something beautiful- whether it was a new patio or a planting bed came very natural. I quickly moved into management roles and soon after moved to Colorado. The industry was an entirely new beast. Everything was so much larger scale. After a couple years of managing teams that were installing million dollar + projects it became very apparent just how corrupt the industry is. It was a common occurrence to have superiors tell me to cut corners or just out right install things incorrectly just to save the company money. I became incredibly resentful. I was overworked, underpaid, and saddened by how many customers were being taken advantage of. After reaching a breaking point I knew I couldn’t continue to be a part of something I truly felt was morally wrong. A switch flipped and I knew I could do it myself- and do it the right way. My mission from day one has been to provide high touch expert craftsmanship at surprisingly affordable rates. By not upcharging material costs or cutting corners I have saved clients thousands upon thousands of dollars. All while building a flourishing business from scratch- no start up capital or loans! I take pride in servicing my community with a home grown personable experience, start to finish. Organic client acquisition from word of mouth and minimal advertising has ensured ideal clientele who usually end up becoming repeat customers or referring me to friends and family.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It couldn’t have been further from a smooth road! There has been multiple occasions over the last 4 years where I strongly considered stepping away and going back to a standard 9-5. I have the highest expectations of myself and my company and am extremely emotionally invested. By starting with only a few thousand dollars of personal savings in my account, it was a massive leap of faith. I have no formal background in business and almost went broke multiple times. There was times where I worried about just purchasing groceries or paying rent. The worry of just paying bills and then missing out on potential projects for any number of reasons really weighed heavily on me and held me back. The fear of losing out on jobs resulted in me way under pricing many projects I did have the privilege of installing, so I always felt like I was scrambling to just survive.
