Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Schupp.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been passionate about storytelling.
I grew up following my friends around on a skateboard with a handheld HI8 camcorder and spent a lot of time hunched behind a glowing desktop computer monitor editing videos. I spent a lot of my youth filming skate videos, stupid skits, and news pieces for my high school TV station.
For college, I attended the University of Missouri. There I studied journalism while working for a production company doing marketing and videography for concerts & music festivals. After graduating, I worked for Boulder advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, where I got to work on social media for some amazing brands including Domino’s Pizza and Kraft Mac & Cheese.
Next, I moved to Boston, MA, where I got an internship at a social media startup. Over several years with that company, I rose the ranks from unpaid intern to Vice President of Marketing and Business Development.
The mountains were calling, so I moved back to Denver. Once back in Colorado, I managed a small advertising agency before moving to manage the North American operations at a website production company headquartered in Amsterdam. In 2017, I decided to found my own company, Crowd Digital Marketing, a web design and digital advertising agency, in Denver, Colorado.
Crowd Digital Marketing collaborates with growing organizations with big ideas and goals, but no in-house team to execute. We partner with our clients to bring their ideas to life with web design, development, social media, and digital advertising services. We have embraced the 4-day workweek. My entire full-time team works a 4-day-a-week schedule.
I’ve gotten the opportunity to work with brands that truly speak to me – some of our clients include The Powder Alliance, Proud Souls Barbecue & Provisions, Woods Boss Brewing Company, Temaki Den, Hovland Snowskates, The City of Boulder and SportsObsession.com.
In my free time, I love being active in Colorado. I am an avid snowboarder and enjoy hiking, foraging, cooking, and disc golf. I also serve on the Board of Directors at 501c3 nonprofit Veterans to Farmers – check them out: www.veteranstofarmers.org.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a company is not easy, and building a brand from scratch has its own set of challenges.
There are digital marketing agencies at every corner, especially in Denver. Leaving my corporate background, my goal was to find a balance between efficiency and client relationships. For us, client results have become paramount in an industry where selling snake oil is a paradigm.
When I started Crowd Digital Marketing, I was lucky enough to have a handful of trusted clients from past work willing to take a chance with us. I’m happy to say it has paid off for all parties.
COVID also presented its own set of challenges for a digital marketing business – but there were opportunities as well. Though some businesses were closing their doors, there were new businesses opening and opportunities for us to help companies incorporate digital tools to help replace in-person operations.
Overall, our key to success has been to keep our heads down, do good work, and make our clients happy. We have built some tremendous client relationships built on trust and great results. There is always someone who will do the work for less money – we focus on doing the job right so our clients can grow their businesses.
We’ve been impressed with Crowd Digital Marketing, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Crowd Digital Marketing works with businesses and organizations with marketing goals, but no in-house agency to accomplish them. We provide tools and experts to help tell your story, engage key stakeholders, and generate sales.
