Exploring Life & Business with Alexa Squillaro and Phil Dumontet of Stronger Faster Boulder LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Squillaro and Phil Dumontet

Hi Alexa and Phil, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As an avid runner, Phil Dumontet, Founder, moved from New York to Boulder in 2017 with the vision of starting a world-class marathon in Boulder, in a new signature downtown format that’s never been done before. After 4 years of concept creation, course development, lobbying, and team organization, Phil & his team produced the first edition in 2021 with 1600 runners. In the past four years, we have grown to over 10,000 runners, and hope to attract even more runners for our 5th edition! Boulderthon, which is now the premier fall race series in Colorado and one of the fastest-growing marathons in the country, hosts runners from all 50 states and 20 countries all over the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part of starting Boulderthon was getting the people of Boulder on board due to residents’ event fatigue. There are so many events on Boulder’s calendar, that Phil needed to purchase an existing race and transform that into the Boulderthon we produce today. Once we had secured an event and a time on the calendar, we had to attend a city council meeting to make sure all stakeholders were on board with this vision. Our city was so kind and quickly accepted this event. From there, we worked hard with the division of Special Events to produce a race that would be great for runners and spectators alike, refining a bit more each year.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Stronger Faster Boulder LLC?
Stronger Faster Boulder LLC is a 501(c)3 non-profit. We created this non-profit so that Boulderthon could be an event for the community in multiple senses. Our goal is to always give back the community that so graciously allows us to hold Boulderthon each year. We run a charity bib component of our race to community members who are unable to afford an entry, which allows us to give away hundreds of entries per year. Additionally, we have worked with individuals on the county level to donate water fountains on the trail, so that our runners stay hydrated during their training runs.

Going forward, we are partnering with Running Mate and Fleet Feet to increase awareness around women’s safety while running, and hope to make important changes that keep all runners safe.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Phil – Being relentless in pursuit of his goals.
Alexa – Being flexible and always making things work, no matter what is thrown at us.
