Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Bentley.
Alexis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My love for interior design started in a middle school elective where we learned architectural drafting and drew floor plans of our dream homes. I was hooked. From that point on, I spent my free time studying layouts and building spaces in video games—anything to scratch that creative itch that working life didn’t quite satisfy.
Design stayed in the background for a long time—until the pandemic hit. I lost my job, took a hard look at what I really wanted, and made the leap to live a more creative life: I went back to school and earned my master’s in Interior Architecture and Design.
Now I get to help people shape the spaces they live in—and turn that early obsession into a career I love. It’s been a full-circle moment in the best way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d love to say it was all easy breezy—but my path has been anything but. My upbringing was pretty unusual. I’m technically the middle of five children, but I grew up as an only child.
My mom and I moved around a lot, lived in low-income housing, and when things got especially tough, we’d stay with friends or family until we could get back on our feet. Those early experiences taught me how to adapt quickly and make the most of what I had. That perspective has deeply shaped how I see the world—and how I approach projects now.
These days, as I focus on building my business, I’m learning just how many hats I have to wear—and how there never seem to be quite enough hours in the day. There have been growing pains. But when things feel overwhelming, I think about water lilies—how they only grow from mud. It’s a reminder that growth isn’t always pretty, but it’s always worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Bentley & Co. Interior Design?
Bentley & Co. Interior Design is a full-service studio with a focus on interior architecture. I love reworking layouts, moving walls, and shaping the flow of a home so it not only functions better, but feels better. I’m especially drawn to projects where we can rethink a space from the inside out—whether it’s a remodel or a brand-new build.
Sustainability is at the core of everything we do. We prioritize materials and methods that minimize environmental impact while maximizing comfort, longevity, and style. I believe good design should support both the people who live in a space and the world around it.
My superpower is really getting to know my clients and designing from a place of deep understanding. I take a holistic approach: how do you live? What does your day look like? How do you want to feel in your space? From the floor plan to the final touches, every decision is shaped by those answers and translated into something beautiful and deeply personal—something that truly reflects who they are.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the opportunity I’ve had to work with families affected by the Marshall Fire. Helping to rebuild their homes has been incredibly meaningful—not just restoring what was lost, but making it better than before.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’ve been incredibly lucky in my life. I’m one of those people who, even when I’m running late, somehow ends up with a front-row parking spot. I’ve had once-in-a-lifetime experiences—like meeting President Obama and sharing a 30-minute car ride conversation with Warren Buffett. Not many people can say that, and I’m incredibly grateful.
But luck isn’t always good—and I’ve had my share of setbacks, too. What I’ve learned is that luck, good or bad, is just a starting point. It’s what you do with it that matters. The key is how you pivot, how you respond, and how you turn challenges into something beautiful.
