Exploring Life & Business with Amy Van Wanseele of Wow 1 Day Painting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Van Wanseele.

Amy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Prior to joining WOW 1 DAY PAINTING, I was in corporate America for 25 years. During that time, I held many operations, sales, and leadership positions within the company. During my tenure, I managed sales territories, large groups of employees, and distribution centers in different cities. I was burnt out and stressed out and decided that if I were going to work this hard, it was going to be for the betterment of myself and my family.

That decision led me to start working with a career coach in early 2021. During that time, I went to several interviews with other large corporations and all the jobs felt the same, just a different name on the business card. During one of our sessions, my career coach suggested that I investigate business ownership. I had always been interested in starting my own company but did not know where to start.

Once I started down the path of being an entrepreneur I never looked back. I decided that buying a franchise made the most sense for me and I interviewed five different franchises and quickly narrowed it down to two companies. WOW 1 DAY PAINTING was at the top of my list, and I was lucky enough to join the company in July 2021. We started production in September 2021, and we have steadily grown over the last 3 years. I am highly motivated knowing I am helping my family, my employees, and my community.

Being a small business owner is one of the hardest and most rewarding things I have done in my career. My passion is building a highly functional team that is always customer-focused. Our team strives to provide an exceptional experience at every job, and we never lose sight that there is a person on the other end of this transaction. Painting is not a life-changing event, but it can change how someone feels about their living space, and those happy faces are what keep us painting.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest challenge is being a female in the heavily male-dominated trades. I have had painters, contractors, and homeowners who would not work with me simply because I am a woman. I now realize that if someone does not want to work with me based on my gender and not my work, that says more about them than it does about me. You have to have a thick skin, and a good sense of humor, and you cannot take any of this too seriously.
