Exploring Life & Business with Andrew Hewett of True Love Tacos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Hewett.

Hi Andrew, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started in March 2020 right as Covid began. Opened on Sheridan and Colfax which is a really tough neighborhood. I knew all the cops, gangsters, and homeless by the time I left that location in April 2022. I saw endless amounts of crime there. I also opened another location in February 2021 at the Lakeview Lounge on Sheridan. Couldn’t get sales high enough there so closed that spot in thanksgiving of 2021.

Now I am catering only. All of our recipes are true authentic Mexican and the food is always fresh. I have respect for all entrepreneurs after starting this business because I know how hard it is. The goal is to never give up and big success will hopefully come one day.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not a smooth road at all. Challenges were finding vendors for meat and supplies during Covid. Pretty much everything with Covid was tough, but we made it through. We were allowed to stay open because we are a taco truck, so we were very lucky about that. I’m good trucks you are always exposed to all the elements super hot in summer and super cold in winter.

Also, selling tacos in a tough side of town I was always on the phone with cops, always shaking people away begging for money, and scaring my customers, I got threatened all the time, had my car get stolen but ran two blocks and beat the person up and got my car back, worked over 100 hours per week at times.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We sell authentic, fresh Mexican food with great customer service. We pride ourselves on making the customer happy. Also, our food is very consistent from one day to the next. I used to have a big menu, but I narrowed it down so we can serve large parties quickly. This is how I’ve learned to make good money. Large corporate parties and private events/weddings are our favorites to cater to.

I love the branding of our name and logo, I think True Love Tacos brings Mexican culture and American cultures together. What sets us apart from others is our execution. With a simpler menu not only can I feed people faster, but when I’m ready to grow it will be an easy cookie-cutter system to multiply to other trucks.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I used to be a competitive freeskier for 12 years. Big mountain skiing and slopestyle and half pipe when I was younger. I’m also a yoga teacher. I like to teach people how to move their bodies in new ways and experience new things.
