Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Farr and Kiersten Hall. They share their story with us below:
Fox Pointe Publishing, LLP is a mother-daughter team that has been working together since 2014; daughter (Chelsea) editing and designing mom’s (Kiersten’s) books. On January 1, 2020, we officially opened our door for business, to help other authors on their publishing journey. Over the past two years, we have grown to forty-one people, twenty-five of whom are authors. To consistently produce high-quality books, we are extremely fortunate to be able to work with some very creative and talented people in the departments of editing, illustrating, designing, marketing, sales, and wholesale/logistics. 2021 closed out at fifty-three active titles and through the first quarter of 2022, we are set to release an additional eight titles. Fox Pointe Publishing averages three new titles per month.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We officially opened on January 1, 2020… That sentence says it all regarding our struggles along the way.
Kiersten has been successfully self-employed for the past 30+ years and is no stranger to starting a business and navigating all of the bumpy and/or washed-out roads to success. I, myself (Chelsea), being Kiersten’s daughter, grew up in a household of self-employment and understand what it takes to grow a successful business. But a global pandemic that shut down the world’s economy was one possibility that never entered either of our minds nor did it play into our feasibility study when planning the set-up and start of Fox Pointe Publishing. If anything, each and every person who works with this company has proved that they’re resilient (and hopeful).
The other issue we have faced as a new business is, we’re the ‘new kids on the block’ in the publishing industry. The past two years have been a double whammy for us, but as I mentioned earlier, the people who work with this company have proven that they’re resilient. 2022 will be our third year of business and it’s setting up to be our most profitable. We’re looking forward to continued growth and success.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
What is Fox Pointe Publishing?
We are a small, full-service, hybrid press of professionals who are particular with whom we work. Most genres are welcome. We prefer to work with authors who are dedicated to their writing craft and are willing to be participants (at varying levels) in the process of getting their book/project to market.
Who represents Fox Pointe Publishing?
Chelsea Farr & Kiersten Hall co-founded Fox Pointe Publishing, LLP in 2019 when they decided to finally put a business name on what they had been doing since 2014… publishing books.
When did Fox Pointe Publishing begin?
Mid-2019 is when Fox Pointe came into existence, but the ‘Open for Business’ sign was hung up on January 1, 2020. Our Children’s Books are published under the imprint of ‘Teacup Press’ which began in July 2020.
Why does Fox Pointe Publishing exist?
To introduce readers to new storytellers. We succeed at this task through our ethical and dedicated work habits. Personal and professional integrity is the key to success.
Where is Fox Pointe Publishing located?
One owner lives in Colorado and the other lives in Minnesota. Fortunately, the internet enables us to do business anywhere and be seen everywhere. We also take part in literary events, art festivals, and B2B/B2C tradeshows. Check us out at www.foxpointepublishing.com. For wholesale inquiries, please email us at wholesale@foxpointepublishing.com.
How is Fox Pointe Publishing different?
- We are NOT a vanity press. We reject more manuscripts than we accept.
- We do not take over and kick the author out of the process; they are a person, not a cog in a machine.
- Published literature & materials are professionally done and represented.
- Everyone who represents Fox Pointe has a strong work ethic (and we’re perfectionists in what we do.) Partial satisfaction in the performance of a job is NOT an option.
What do you think about happiness?
Chelsea: I oversee every project from acquisition to publication, so I get to see all of these ideas form and evolve, see teams of authors, editors, illustrators, and designers collaborate, see rough drafts and concept art grow together to become compelling and beautiful books. That’s thrilling to me, to see people create, then combine their creations to make something that’s going to make a child smile, or make an avid reader stay up all night, not able to put their book down. It’s a privilege to be a part of that process. It also made me happy when a friend of mine told me her little nephew loved one of our books so much, he had her read it every day and now she’s placed a moratorium on it to preserve her sanity.
Kiersten: I’m on the sales and marketing end of a book’s journey, so for me, it’s getting in shipments of beautifully-produced books, then placing them in front of a consumer, be it through a retailer or at a B2B/B2C event. The oohs and aahs, the wide-eyed happiness—that’s when I know our drive for absolute perfection through integrity and hard work has paid off once again. Seeing the joy that our books bring to people… that’s happiness.
