Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Knight.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a Georgia native and attended the University of West Georgia for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I have always been interested in human behavior and psychology so it made sense for me to study these topics in college. After completing my undergraduate work, I was fortunate enough to get a job as a program coordinator in a partial hospitalization program for children and adolescents. It was here that I got a crash course in the mental health field and I was hooked! After completing my graduate degree, I briefly lived in Alabama where I had the opportunity to work in both an outpatient clinic as well as a long-term residential facility for teenage boys. After returning to Georgia, I worked in a psychiatric emergency room, which provided a very unique and valuable experience. I then found my way into the school system where I was a school counselor for about 6 years. In the summer of 2024, my husband and I decided it was time to follow our dreams and move our family to Colorado and by August, we were here! I was lucky enough to get a position with a group practice upon our arrival and this gave me the confidence to venture out on my own. I opened Aspen Leaf Counseling in October 2025 with the belief that true healing begins with connection — connection with self, with others, and with the natural rhythms of life. After working in larger clinical settings and schools for the past 17 years, I saw the need for a more personal and compassionate approach to therapy — one that allows clients to feel seen, supported, and understood at their own pace.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Full transparency: opening a private practice has always been one of those lofty goals that I had that felt too terrifying to actually pursue. It was something that other therapists did but not something I could do. Once I finally decided to take the plunge though, like most things, it turned out to be way less scary than I thought it would be. The biggest struggle has been navigating all of the start up things: billing, insurance, marketing, office space, etc. I was also pretty surprise at how hard it was just to nail down a name 🙂 I was lucky enough to start with a solid client base and referrals have been coming in as well. Sometimes I sit here in disbelief that I’m actually “doing the thing”.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Aspen Leaf Counseling is a private mental health therapy practice offering individual therapy to people ages 14 thru 65. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in both Colorado and Georgia, and I specialize in OCD, life transitions, anxiety, grief, and pre/postpartum transitions. There are many therapists out there doing great work but I feel what sets me apart from others is my approach. I use humor and unconditional positive regard with my clients. Everyone has the capacity to be successful, as they define it, and I love helping people realize this about themselves.
I accept most major insurance plans but I will also see self-pay clients. I like to do a 15 minute consult call with potential clients just to learn a bit more about them and to make sure I’m able to support them in the way that they need. After this call, we schedule an intake session and go from there!
How do you define success?
Success, to me, is living in a way that aligns with your values, whatever they may be. I had a traumatic personal loss about 10 years ago that really caused me to pivot in my perceptions of both myself and my life. The fact that despite this event, I’m living and chasing this dream makes me extremely proud and humbled at how things have changed for me in the past 10 years. I have a wonderful family and am living in the most beautiful place I could ever imagine.; I’m pursuing my dream and haven’t fallen on my face .. this is success to me.
