Today we’d like to introduce you to Gillian Butler.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Gillian Butler, and I’ve recently taken on the role of program/marketing coordinator for the Rocky Mountain Folk School since June of 2023.
Grand Lake, CO, has always been my home, and my connection to this community led me back here after some time away. Originally from Grand County, I recently returned, having spent a period working as a publication designer in North Carolina. My heart has always been in Grand Lake, and this move allowed me to align my passion for the arts with my dream job.
Having grown up in Grand County, my appreciation for the local art scene and the beauty of the surrounding mountains has been a constant in my life.
Joining the Rocky Mountain Folk School has been a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the flourishing artistic community here. In my role, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with incredibly talented artists, each bringing their unique perspectives and art forms to our vibrant community. The Rocky Mountain Folk School, established in 2022, has been steadily making progress, and being part of this journey is truly fulfilling. We are fortunate to reside in a town with a wealth of creative individuals, contributing to the establishment of a thriving creative district.
As I continue in this role, my goal is to further promote the rich cultural heritage and artistic expression that defines the Rocky Mountain Folk School. In line with the school’s mission of keeping traditional arts alive, my focus is on providing year-round learning opportunities for artists of all levels, whether they are novices eager to explore new forms or passionate individuals seeking to deepen their knowledge in their art.
I am dedicated to fostering an inclusive and inspiring environment where artists can come together, share their craft, and collectively contribute to the cultural vibrancy of Grand Lake, CO. This commitment to continuous learning and the preservation of traditional arts forms the cornerstone of our vision at the Rocky Mountain Folk School. I look forward to being a part of this journey and contributing to the growth and enrichment of our artistic community.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating the path to where we stand now has been a journey filled with both challenges and triumphs. Starting afresh, we encountered the initial hurdles of establishing our brand and building recognition for the Rocky Mountain Folk School.
It involved extensive efforts in researching, strategizing, and constantly seeking new avenues to market our school. Finding skilled art instructors and attracting attendees were pivotal tasks that demanded meticulous planning and dedication. Selecting optimal dates and times for our events required a delicate balance, considering factors like high attendance potential and participant availability.
Despite the challenges, these experiences have been incredibly rewarding. Witnessing the growth from our humble beginnings to the current stage fuels my optimism about the bright future that lies ahead for the Rocky Mountain Folk School. The struggles we faced have not only strengthened our resolve but have also become integral parts of our narrative.
I am confident that as we continue to overcome obstacles and expand our reach, our school will become synonymous with traditional arts learning, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Grand Lake, CO.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
While my journey with the Rocky Mountain Folk School began after the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, I have witnessed and learned valuable lessons from the experiences of those around me.
The pandemic has underscored the resilience of communities and the importance of adaptability. In the arts and education sectors, it has highlighted the need for innovative approaches to stay connected with audiences and continue providing meaningful experiences.
While my direct experience may not have been shaped by the pandemic, the lessons learned by the broader community during this challenging time undoubtedly influence our collective approach to fostering creativity, learning, and community engagement at the Rocky Mountain Folk School.
