Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Jackson.
Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I officially started my photography business in 2015, which grew out of a desire to create something more from my hobby and maintain flexibility with my family life. I have a Bachelors in Marketing from Texas A&M and owning my studio has been a great way to combine my creative side with my business skills.
I originally started with a deep love of newborn and baby photography and grew to expand more outdoor offerings for families and high school seniors. I have continued to add to my photography education each year by learning new technical skills, trying a new creative branch, or even honing pieces of my business processes. It’s important to me to choose at least one course or venue per year that keeps me up-to-date on trends or adds to my business and client experience in some way.
Over these last years, I also pushed myself creatively to enter photography competitions and enter pieces of my work for judging. It’s not always easy to get feedback on your work, but it highlights areas where I can improve and shows me where I want to find my creative voice. So as I’ve grown my company and continue to serve families by preserving their memories with a wonderful client experience, I also have won several awards with prestigious.
I’m now a certified Master in Newborn, Baby, and Maternity photography with the National Association of Professional Photographers (NAPCP) after a rigorous portfolio review, hold several medals with NAPCP for their Inspired print competition and international digital competitions, and have placed or merited in RISE, International Photo Awards, and Color Awards.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Owning your own business is never a straight path. As you go along there are always things that pop up that you realize are needed processes to help clients or help behind the scenes with the company flow. For the first 5 years, I had to work around raising my kids which meant calendaring with my husband when scheduling clients, working around naps, and then editing at night after kids were asleep. I started my company when my third child was just 4 months old, and now have 5 total kids ages 5-11 years old. So for a long time, I felt I was fitting in my business work whenever I could.
I also realized early on that I needed to not just take courses on taking pictures but also learn how to help myself speed up my post-processes like culling, editing, and delivering galleries. One course was particularly amazing at honing my Photoshop editing skills and I’m grateful I’d signed up for it right before Covid hit. The course was 8 weeks long with weekly homework, 1-2 hour Zoom work review on said homework, and then watching the course videos each week. But it made a huge difference in speeding my workflow and giving me skills to bring my creative editing visions to life.
