Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Carton.
Hi Kevin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was younger, I thought I was doing everything right. I was in college in a 6 year doctorate program in pharmacy, I had a clear career path, I was getting straight A’s and B’s in my classes, and there was a shiny 6 figure salary on the horizon. In my 4th year, I was surprised to find myself stuck in a state of anxiety & depression. While I enjoyed the scientific side of pharmacy, I saw a different side of the story once I started working in a community pharmacy. Over several months, I saw the same people coming back again and again with the same health issues. I started to notice a pattern of despair in their faces and feel their pain because even with the medications we were dispensing, their overall health wasn’t getting better. I realized that most of the time we were treating symptoms and not the underlying cause. After a full year of working in that field, I felt completely disheartened because I didn’t feel like I was actually making a difference. Deep down I knew I wanted to quit, but I had no clue what I would want to do instead. I also felt guilty because my parents had invested tens of thousands of dollars in my education already. And I felt extremely alone because no one was supportive of my calling to leave. While all this was going on, I was barely making enough money (earning just $12,000 a year) to afford rent for where I was living… which meant I couldn’t afford other things I wanted to do, like snowboarding trips in the winter… Plus, I was in a cramped apartment with a small closet-like room with roommates also in pharmacy school who were questioning why I wanted to quit.
For an entire semester in school I struggled with all of these issues slowly building, with the main focus on “should I stay in pharmacy or leave and do something else?” My mind was screaming to stay and just finish my degree, but my heart was constantly nudging me to leave… On one of the last days of my 4th year, I was in a pharmacy lab with my classmates nervously waiting for our professor to give us our test scores back from our final exam. I knew I didn’t do well because my heart hadn’t been in my studies for months now. When I received the slip of paper with my grade on it, I opened it up and discovered that for the first time in my doctorate of pharmacy program I received a C-, which meant that I failed… Not only that, this class was required to continue on to get my doctorate degree… I felt like I got punched in my gut and my face got beet red from the embarrassment. My mind started racing about the negative consequences… This failure meant that I would have to repeat an entire year of classes… more money required, more time required, friends moving on past me, another year of hating what I was doing… It was devastating… but what happened next changed my life forever…
As I walked out of that pharmacy lab and the noise of my classmates started to diminish, I noticed a new, more empowered voice rise up from within me. That voice said, “Kevin, you failed that class because you DO NOT want to continue in this career! Take the leap of faith.” I knew in my bones this was right, but the fear flooded back in. “What will I do instead?” “What if I fail at something else?” “What if this is the wrong decision?” Then, a question dawned on me… and this is a major key that I’ve learned now… that the quality of our life is determined by the quality of questions we ask ourselves… so my question to myself was, “when I get to the end of my life and reflect on this time, what decision would I be the most proud of as I look back?” The answer was clear, so despite the uncertainty of what was going to happen next, I accepted a 4 year bachelors degree and finally made the scary decision to NOT continue to get my doctorate in pharmacy.
That was a powerful moment, and it gets better! There’s a saying that goes… “when the student is ready, the teacher appears.” That was true for me because just 2 days after my decision, I met a woman named Mary Morrissey who is a world-renowned expert in “Dream Building”. She began to teach me a proven, reliable, repeatable system of transformation to turn any dream into a reality. Her message spoke directly to my soul, but to be honest a part of me thought it was too good to be true LOL. I suspended my skepticism, I tried it out, and I’m so glad I did. I began dreaming of a life where I had discovered my purpose and was doing work that I loved. I imagined making a real difference in people’s lives and feeling fulfilled by my work, even though I didn’t know what that would be yet. I also dreamed of earning an abundant income so that I could have the freedom to buy a home, to travel to different countries, to go snowboarding whenever I wanted… I dreamt of meeting “the one” and getting married… It all felt SO real and exciting, but it also seemed impossible. Eventually Mary Morrissey offered further support through a 1 year coaching program to help me transform my dream into a reality… I knew this woman could help me because not only did she build her dreams by living what she was teaching, but she also had helped thousands of others do the same. And I KNEW this was my next step to get the support to build my dream life.
The challenge was that the investment was $13,000.
It was almost all of the money I had even with a generous graduation gift from my parents… and it was more money than I had ever made in a year. I wrestled with the fear of uncertainty, but I knew I deeply desired this support, so I took a leap of faith and invested in myself and my dream. It ended up being one of the BEST decisions of my entire life.
I committed to showing up, challenging myself through what I was learning from my mentor, and being willing to transform… With the support from Mary, things changed drastically for me.
I had no idea that in just the first 2 months, I would leave my part-time community pharmacy job and land a new job as an advisor to college students, which doubled my monthly income! As my dreams began to get more clear, I discovered my love for yoga, so this path led me to getting trained as a yoga teacher and teaching yoga to hundreds of students in New York City, which increased my income even more. Then, by the end of this first year of coaching with my mentor, I landed a full time job as a content developer for a world-renowned life-coaching company, which tripled my income from when I started!
I was already living a version of my dream within the first year, but that was just the beginning… I continued to invest in coaching with my mentor year after year and this DreamBuilding journey led me to discover my true soul’s purpose… to be a speaker, teacher and transformational life coach. My life changed so much from having a coach that I knew I could make a real difference for others through this kind of work too. So I decided to get trained and certified as a transformational life coach in 2017, I left my job and I started my own company, Soul Legacy Inc. I’ve had the privilege now of personally coaching over 200 clients from all around the world… I am impacting tens of thousands of people’s lives a month through my podcast Science & Spirituality that has over 53,000 followers on Spotify with listeners in over 113 different countries and over 1.3 million downloads…
I feel so grateful to say that now I’m doing work I LOVE every day and I feel deeply fulfilled because I get to make a real difference in the world by helping people create and live a life they love.
Plus, after applying the principles I learned over the years, I attracted the love of my life, Vivianne, and got married!! We’ve taken grand adventures together, like traveling to Spain and to Iceland, and she even loves to snowboard with me in the winter. The freedom in time and money this journey has provided me has been a blessing as well… My business consistently generates over six figures in income a year and I love that I get to set my own schedule every day.
Overall, I’m living my dreams because of what I learned and applied, and I deeply believe it’s possible for anyone else as well.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all! Fear was a constant companion along the journey and it continues to be. In fact, the truth is that building a dream life *includes* fear! It’s impossible to not have some fear along the way because fear is simply a sign that we’re going beyond our comfort zone. Our physiology is designed to create fear when we do something new, so it’s not a bad sign. We’ve just been programmed to fear fear! All that being said, fear is one of the major struggles that took me years to change my relationship with, but once I did, everything in life got easier. In addition, I struggled a lot with being young as well. Not a lot of people took me seriously when I mentioned that I was a certified life coach at age 24. Not to mention that I also have a “baby face”, or in other words, a very youthful appearance. It took me a few years to develop a strong sense of self confidence and self esteem despite what others thought of me. Through those years of experiences, I deepened my belief that your age truly doesn’t matter. You can do anything you set your mind and heart on.
We’ve been impressed with Soul Legacy Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I founded my company to be a place for people to get to know themselves more deeply than before. Often we think of ourselves as our personality – our name, our age, our gender, what we look like or even what we do for work – but who we truly are is more than any one of these labels. We are a soul having this human experience, yet most of us have never been taught how to get to know our authentic self as a soul. So my work as a transformation life coach is helping people get to know who they are, so they can then discover and live their soul’s purpose. I specialize in helping people reprogram their mind and body, so they can reconnect with and live from their soul-self. I’d say what sets me apart from others is that I take a scientific approach to spirituality. I ground all that I teach and coach my clients through in modern science, so that any skepticism from the logic can be released with confidence. I’m most proud brand wise that I’ve helped a wide range of people from teenagers to people in their 60’s, as well as different people from over a dozen different countries. I’m blessed to say that my work is truly global. Aside from that, I’d love for your readers to know that I’m very approachable when it comes to my offerings – I always love to offer a complimentary 1 hour Zoom meeting that I call a strategy session, so I can provide support right away and explore if we’re a good fit to work together. Investing in a coaching program with me afterward is always optional and I make sure the feeling is invitational, never obligatory.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
One of the main ways that people can work with me is through my coaching programs, one of which is called the DreamBuilder Coaching Program. I work with clients for a minimum of 3 months so that the results they achieve are sustainable. If someone wants to collaborate with me or support me, check out my podcast that I co-host with my brother Chris – it’s called Science & Spirituality and you can find us on Spotify, Apple, or Google podcasts.
