Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Spead.
Kimberly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
During the last few years, I’ve found myself looking for a way to connect with my community and offer something positive and uplifting. Our town has recently undergone a bit of revitalization and has gained popularity as a small-town gem with great food, shopping, and community events. My desire to add to this small-town charm came in the form of a flower truck. I spent months researching the industry and searching for the perfect vehicle. After coming across my dream truck (a 1967 Volkswagen Single Cab Transporter) Wild & Blume Flower Truck officially launched on Mother’s Day Weekend of this year.
This year has been a learning whirlwind both from both a business standpoint and a relational one. I had no idea that selling flowers would be such a life-giving gift to myself and my community. Conversations with people covered everything from the “cool truck” to “my mother used to have a garden and always grew_____.” These conversations made all of our hearts fuller. I know this sounds like unicorns and rainbows, but there really is a connection made between people and flowers. Even if people didn’t make a purchase, they enjoyed taking pause to take in the beauty of the flowers and the smells. I learned how to better engage and listen because most people love sharing their story.
When you create an idea there is always a bit of fear surrounding how that idea will be received. This year has shown me that people connect with flowers and that in and of itself has value.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Setting up a new business was definitely on the challenging side. Getting things nailed down like tax licenses, permits along with making sure that I was are in compliance with current laws was far from glamorous work. Pushing through the murkiness of these things solidified that my end goal was still worth it.
It is also difficult not to kick myself when I make an avoidable mistake either because I am moving too fast or not paying attention to the details. There were a few events that I realized after the fact that I had misquoted (in the clients’ favor) and I had to take the loss. If anything, I have learned to triple-check and slow down. Sometimes you can be so excited for the job that you miss something.
There has also been major international flower shortages which caused me to begin researching local flower farms. What I found was a wonderful, hardworking community of Colorado flower growers. Being able to support local and give these growers another outlet to sell their crops via my flower truck has been amazing. I was able to join a collective and now provide local flowers whenever possible. This has been yet another way to connect to the greater community.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Wild & Blume Flower Truck?
I own the first flower truck based out of Castle Rock, Colorado. Pop-up shops are my focus. The pop-ups are typically located in the downtown Castle Rock area. The concept is a flower bar, which means I have a large variety of fresh flowers and greens priced per stem, Customers can create anything they want within their budget. I also offer private events, classes, and delivery services. The truck is quite a show-stopper at events! I’ve brought the truck to grand openings, weddings, and small neighborhood gatherings. I believe what sets me apart are the personal touches I give all my flower clients. From hand-delivery to my packaging and branding, everything is curated to give customers an experience they will love. Watching people interact with the flowers and truck as they create their bouquet is one on my favorite things. There are typically stories shared and questions asked and I love taking the time to interact and connect.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
People deeply desire to connect. Even if it is just for a moment. I think Covid issues have made a lot of people realize they need to find alternate ways to continue to connect all while being safe health-wise. I love that my flower truck is able to operate outdoors and give people the opportunity to take a bit of beauty back home with them in the form of flowers. I’d like to think I am helping them create places of connection even within their homes.
