If our story was made into a headline, I think it would be something like this; Blooming Through Adversity: How Prairie Hill Flower Co. is Cultivating Joy in a Post-Pandemic World

It all started for us when the world seemed to stand still back in 2019, in the shadow of COVID-19 when many of us sought solace in the quiet corners of our homes. But what I didn’t know, amidst this global crisis, is that a dream was in the process of being planted—a dream that would soon blossom into something extraordinary.

Founded during the peak of the pandemic, Prairie Hill Flower Co. was created. My dream began as a simple desire to find a way to nurture the human spirit during a time when our country was navigating a crisis we had never experienced before. Driven by a deep sense of purpose and a dream placed in my heart, I envisioned a place where people could escape their confines and reconnect with nature in a meaningful way. My family and I, modified our family garden on our 10 acre farm into a 1/4 acre area that would successfully grow flowers. Learning the ins and outs of flower farming through an online course, I started cultivating seedlings in my basement and learned how to transfer them outside to continue to grow in our garden space.

As our growing season picked up and social distancing and lockdowns continued to affect daily life, we were able to offer a refreshing alternative through our You-Pick experience. This initiative allowed visitors to immerse themselves outdoors in a sea of vibrant blooms while properly distancing, selecting and arranging flowers to take with them to bring joy into their homes. We had so many flowers that we typically had our guests make an arrangement not only for themselves, but one to give to someone else. This simple yet profound act became a beacon of joy and a symbol of hope, providing a much-needed respite from the darkness that had enveloped so many lives.

Our idea was more than just a business model; it was a mission to spread positivity and beauty during a time of unprecedented uncertainty. Visitors found solace in the act of picking flowers and creating their own arrangements, experiencing firsthand the therapeutic power of nature’s simplest pleasures. Each bouquet crafted became a vessel of joy, traveling from one hand to another, creating a ripple effect of kindness and cheer in the community.

Post-COVID, what began as a seasonal sanctuary for flower enthusiasts quickly captured the hearts of many. Our clients, enchanted by the beauty and craftsmanship of our floral arrangements, voiced a clear demand for expansion. Their enthusiastic requests signaled a new chapter for us, one that transformed Prairie Hill Flower Co. from a seasonal flower farm into a full-time European-style florist.

Today, we at Prairie Hill Flower Co. seamlessly combine the charm of a seasonal flower farm with the sophistication of a year-round florist. Our services extend beyond the summer months, offering daily deliveries, exquisite floral arrangements for private and corporate events, and unforgettable wedding flowers through our Signature Wedding flower experience. Each creation reflects our dedication to quality and artistry, inspired by the timeless elegance of European floral design, something that has quickly propelled us to the top. Prairie Hill Flower Co. has won 5 Best of awards in 2024 as voted on by the community and based on our feedback from our clients. In addition to our comprehensive floral services, we continue to nurture our community’s love for flowers through unique workshops and events. During the summer and holiday seasons, we host interactive flower arranging sessions that allow participants to explore their creativity and deepen their appreciation for floral art.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Flower farming is far from the idyllic image often portrayed on social media. While the picturesque scenes of blooming fields may seem glamorous, the reality of cultivating flowers is marked by a unique set of challenges. In Colorado, where the weather is notoriously unpredictable, our floral endeavors are frequently put to the test.

From sudden storms that pummel our delicate blooms to pests that threaten each petal’s perfection, flower farming is a constant battle against nature’s whims. We’ve faced devastating losses, including a complete crop loss from hail in previous years to a recent grasshopper infestation that ravaged nearly everything we planted this spring. Such setbacks are a harsh reminder of the fragile balance between nurture and nature.

Despite these hurdles, flower farming remains a labor of love. It is hot, arduous work that often defies profitability, but the spirit of resilience and determination drives us forward. Farmers like myself, and countless others across the country, embrace the challenges with unwavering dedication. Our hands are weathered and stained from hours of working in the soil, yet each moment spent tending to our fields is a testament to our devotion and passion.
