Exploring Life & Business with Luke Huxley of AstroTours.org

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Huxley

Luke, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, where the Rocky Mountains’ night skies ignited my fascination with the cosmos from an early age. After earning a degree in physics with minors in astrophysics and geophysics from the University of Colorado, I delved into research on active galactic nuclei and completed projects ranging from quasar studies to innovative payload launch methods using magnetism.

My journey took an adventurous turn when I worked with the U.S. Forest Service’s wildland fire hand crew, leading me to remote corners of the United States under some of the darkest skies. This experience was followed by a stint as a fire lookout near Lake Tahoe, where I spent days scanning for fires and nights exploring the stars with large binoculars.

A pivotal moment came during a visit to Hawaii’s Mauna Kea Observatory, which inspired me to broaden my studies and fueled my passion for astronomy education. Post-graduation, I ventured to Australia on a work visa, where I had the privilege of working as a tour guide for “Space Gandalf” at Astro Tours Broome and as an astronomer at the Gravity Discovery Centre in Western Australia. These roles allowed me to share the wonders of the night sky with diverse audiences and deepened my appreciation for astronomy’s unifying power.

Upon returning to the U.S., I recognized a unique opportunity to bring similar experiences to Colorado. This realization led to the founding of AstroTours.org, where I now combine my scientific background and storytelling to create immersive stargazing adventures. Our mission is to make the cosmos accessible to all, fostering a shared sense of wonder and connection as we navigate our collective journey through the universe.

At AstroTours, we connect guests with the stars while weaving in stories of science, history, and myth. My hope is to inspire curiosity and a sense of connection — not just with the cosmos, but with each other and our shared journey on this tiny, extraordinary planet.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey has certainly had its challenges. One of the biggest obstacles I faced was upon returning to the United States after my time in Australia. Having worked as a tour guide for “Space Gandalf” at Astro Tours Broome and as an astronomer at the Gravity Discovery Centre, I was eager to continue sharing the wonders of the night sky. However, I quickly realized that similar opportunities didn’t exist in Colorado. This meant starting from scratch to create AstroTours.org.

Building a business from the ground up was both exciting and daunting. I had to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship—securing funding, acquiring equipment, and handling logistics—all while trying to promote astronomy education in a way that resonated with the community. There were moments of uncertainty, especially when trying to reach audiences who might not have considered stargazing as an accessible or engaging activity.

Additionally, educating people about light pollution and advocating for dark sky preservation presented its own set of challenges. It required not just offering tours but also engaging in community outreach and education to highlight the importance of our night skies.

Despite these hurdles, each challenge taught me valuable lessons and ultimately made AstroTours stronger. The obstacles pushed me to innovate and find creative solutions, and seeing guests inspired by their first glimpse of the cosmos makes every struggle worthwhile.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
AstroTours.org is the realization of my dream to make the wonders of the universe accessible to everyone. We offer hands-on, guided night tours using telescopes, lasers, and binoculars, led by a team of passionate local astronomers. Our guests get the rare opportunity to observe planets, constellations, nebulae, clusters, galaxies, and even shooting stars with their own eyes.

What sets us apart is our unique blend of scientific education and storytelling. We specialize in connecting celestial objects to their mythological and historical significance, weaving tales from diverse cultures and continents. This approach not only enriches the stargazing experience but also promotes a greater understanding of our shared human heritage.

I’m particularly proud of our commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship. As DarkSky Advocates, we conduct our tours with minimal environmental impact and actively promote dark sky preservation. We believe that reducing light pollution is essential for both enjoying the night sky and protecting wildlife ecosystems.

Our mission extends beyond astronomy; it’s about fostering a sense of unity and shared humanity. We aim to highlight how small our planet is in the grand scheme of things and how this perspective can bridge gaps between people. By offering multiple programs year-round, we strive to inspire the next generation of astronomers and ignite a lifelong curiosity about the universe.

I want readers to know that AstroTours.org is more than just a stargazing tour—it’s an invitation to connect with the cosmos and each other. Whether you’re a seasoned astronomy enthusiast or looking through a telescope for the first time, we welcome you to join us on this incredible journey through the night sky.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up under the vast skies of Denver, Colorado, I was a curious and adventurous child with an insatiable fascination for the cosmos. One of my family’s favorite stories recounts how, as a toddler, I pointed up at the full moon and excitedly exclaimed, “MOOOOOOON!” That early wonderment set the tone for my lifelong passion for astronomy.

I was the kind of kid who loved exploring the outdoors, often venturing into the Rocky Mountains to hike and stargaze. My grandfather nurtured my budding interest by gifting me a 4-inch Mak-Cassegrain telescope when I was in middle school. That telescope became my constant companion, and I spent countless nights learning to navigate the sky, identifying planets, stars, and constellations on my own.

Academically, I was drawn to science, especially physics and astronomy. I was always eager to learn how things worked, from the smallest particles to the vast expanses of space. But I wasn’t confined to the classroom; I craved hands-on experiences. After high school, I joined a wildland fire hand crew with the U.S. Forest Service. This opportunity took me to remote corners of the United States, where I slept under some of the darkest skies and deepened my appreciation for the natural world.

My personality has always been a blend of inquisitive and adventurous. I sought out unique experiences, like working on a commercial fishing vessel off the coast of Oregon, where I became attuned to the rhythms of the tides and phases of the moon. These experiences not only satisfied my sense of adventure but also enriched my understanding of our planet’s interconnected systems.

I was also involved in community and educational activities, volunteering at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to run telescopes for solar observing and special events. This allowed me to share my enthusiasm for astronomy with others, something that has always brought me great joy.

These formative years were a tapestry of exploration, learning, and a deepening love for the cosmos. They shaped not just my career path but also my desire to connect people with the wonders of the universe. This journey eventually led me to establish AstroTours.org, fulfilling a dream to bring the magic of the night sky to others and inspire a shared sense of wonder.
