Today we’d like to introduce you to Maire Daugharty.
Maire, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am an anesthesiologist who decided to become a mental health clinician after practicing for a little over 15 years post training. I became very aware of our work climate evolving to become quite problematic, I noted the exorbitantly high completed suicide rate particularly in my specialty and I decided I wanted to contribute to making a positive difference. I have also long had an interest in mental health and went to medical school thinking I would become a psychiatrist. I did not favor the medication management approach that has become a majority of that training. Ultimately I went back to graduate school and pursued additional training in the modalities which I favor and licensed in counseling and marriage and family therapy. I opened a private practice working with adult individuals and couples and continue to work part time as an anesthesiologist. A great combination!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. I explored the idea of doing a second residency in psychiatry but ultimately recognized that perspectives had not changed much. I applied to and started at Argosy University in Denver, a great hybrid option for working adults. Unfortunately, it was purchased and embezzled and closed down just before I started the Practicum and Internship portion of my training. They did a great job finding alternatives for us and I transferred to Regis for a short period but which was not a good fit for me and my full time working schedule. I graduated from Hodges University in FL, fortunately one of my instructors moved there and reached out to see if any of us would like to finish our degrees there. I felt an enormous amount of anxiety about career change in the first place, I was stepping out of a well established career into something of the unknown, but am so fortunate to have had the opportunities that I did despite some bumps in the road. Building my practice has been a joy.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I named my practice a bit after our anesthesia group, Physician Anesthesia Services because it embodied the values I uphold. It is a service offered, and I offer it in that spirit. I also wanted to focus on vitality because we lose this in our day to day responsibilities which can sometimes feel overwhelming. I wanted to help with problem solving, depression, anxiety, ADHD, burnout, for example, but I wanted the focus to be coming out on the other side reconnected with a sense of vitality.
Any big plans?
My only plan is to continue growing and refining the services I offer. I recently added medication management for outpatient care, I do presentations, writing, and podcast interviews to share my views and approach which is really important in a psychotherapy practice and I continue to seek opportunities to engage this important work.
