Exploring Life & Business with Mallory Choate of Natural Nutrition by Mallory

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Choate.

Hi Mallory, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I really got into nutrition as a career because of my own unhealthy relationship with food. I grew up a dancer and found a lot of the aesthetic pressure that comes with dancing to sway my eating choices. While it took me years to recover from the disordered habits I developed as an adolescent, it catapulted me into the most rewarding career. I received my Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University, and my Master of Science from Central Michigan University, and obtain my national credentialing as a Registered Dietitian, my dream since I was 17 years old.

Since diving into the world of nutrition, I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing people and organizations including the Denver Broncos, the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders, UCHealth, the Denver Colorado Figure Skating Club, as well as multiple local gyms and studios like Pure Barre, E3 Fitness, and RowHouse. I most recently moved from the clinical nutrition space into a full-time coaching role contracted with DLD Nation, a virtual coaching company with a client-centered, personalized wellness experience.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to becoming a Registered Dietitian is certainly a rocky one, and that was absolutely the case for my story.

After spending 5 years in my undergraduate program, it took me another 4 years to be matched with an internship.

The matching process is much like the process students who are applying to medical school go through, a lot of it is up to chance. I had applied every year for this required process to become an RD, and of course hearing “no” over and over was disheartening, but I honestly didn’t want to be anything else – This was my path. After pursuing my license for 10 years, and now 5 years into my career, looking back, that perseverance, focus, and drive have all helped me grow so much as a human and professional. I try to believe that everything happens when and how it should, even if we can’t understand it at the moment.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business, Natural Nutrition by Mallory is a private practice nutrition coaching company with an emphasis on helping women achieve food freedom, break through burnout, and show up more vibrantly in their lives. Moving through my own challenges with food, exercise, and bouts of burnout, it is incredibly important to me to help other type-A, high-achieving women find the power in caring for themselves before pouring into others, and find a way to thrive through the day, not simply survive.

What I believe sets me apart is my non-diet culture-promoting, non-extreme approach to making real, lasting change – as well as my insight through my personal journey. Being able to relate to my clients, lead them by example, and show that there is life on the other side of feeling drained, run-down, and burnt out, are some of my greatest assets. There is so much in the nutrition space that focuses on weight loss, or aesthetic changes – which is all well and good, and I find that I am filling a gap in the industry to address the internal health aspects we all need to repair to show up as our best selves, inside and out.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I can confidently say that luck didn’t play a huge role in getting me where I am today, maybe with the exception of finding my husband – I still pinch myself over the life I get to spend with him. But professionally speaking, I worked incredibly hard to get to where I am today.

I pushed through challenges, didn’t take “no” for an answer when I knew what I wanted, and put in the time, effort, and patience it took to make it happen. I would also say that the setbacks, stalls, and other obstacles I have faced aren’t from bad luck either. They were moments that called me to grow, stretch, and change into the woman and business owner I am today.
