Exploring Life & Business with Mayte Manrique of Styles By Mayte

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayte Manrique.

Mayte, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started off my journey as a self-taught nail tech when I was 15. My senior year of high school I was able to enroll at Emily Griffith Technical College and studied Cosmetology. My main focus at the time was to get licensed to just do nails but, I quickly learned that I had a passion for doing hair as well. When I finished beauty school, I worked at a salon as an apprentice for a short while. About eight months later, I moved to a small local shop in Lakewood where I found my true calling. They taught me everything I needed to know about men’s hair, hair to clean up my fades, and how to do a clean lineup. I learned pretty fast, so when I got more comfortable with my clippers, I started to teach myself designs. It started with small lines and then I worked myself up to some curvy designs and I’m going to be honest I’m still learning. Stars were the hardest for me! After 4 years, I had gained a lot of knowledge, made connections, and gained the confidence to finally step out on my own. In March 2020, Styles By Mayte was born. I established myself at a small local barbershop in north Denver. I worked with some amazing barbers. It was tough starting up because the pandemic had started two weeks after I started. Once May came around, I was back behind the chair and motivated to grow. A later that year, I ended up with Covid which allowed me to reflect on goals for myself and my business.

In December of 2020, I opened up my little salon. I started renting a suite at Solera Salon suites in Denver. It has been the best decision for my business and my clients. It’s nice and private and personalized to my style. My clients feel welcomed and safe which is very important to me as well as them walking out with fresh looks. I have specialized in eyebrow waxing, color services, perms, and haircutting services.

This year I decided to grow my business and branched back to nail services, MG Nail Design. It’s a great new start and I’m glad I was able to make it possible.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was difficult starting up on my own. The pandemic had started about two weeks after I started at a new shop. Getting to build my clientele again was a little slow at first but luckily by the summertime of 2020, I was back to busy days. Getting Covid was also hard and having many clients cancel at times because everyone was getting sick put my business behind. Sometimes I questioned if being on my own was the right move but I had the right support from family and even my own clients.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Styles By Mayte is where you go if you want a fresh new style! I specialize in men’s services, so fades to beard clean-ups. I also offer eyebrow waxing services, haircuts for the whole family, color services, and perms. I like to build unique relationships with all my clients so that every time they step in the salon, they feel safe and welcomed. I take my time to offer the best service experience by offering complimentary shampooing with every hair service and styling with great products like Gibs grooming and Johnny B.

What does success mean to you?
Success is built on motivation and drive! Getting up every day and telling myself that I’m going to have a great day keeps me going. I make sure to keep my space clean and make sure the vibe is good at all times.
