Melanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
If I go all the way back to the beginning, I’ll really date myself, so let’s just say, I started my career back when you had to use a CD-ROM to get on the internet. Literally. I worked in marketing at America Online, helping send out those famous AOL disks and convincing people that dial-up was the future. And yes, I was there for the ‘You’ve got mail’ era.”

But if I rewind even a little further, my spark came from an unexpected place: fashion. On a whim, I took a fashion class in high school and was completely inspired by the creativity and storytelling of the industry. I didn’t want to design clothes, and trust me, no one wants me to, but I knew I wanted to be in marketing channeling creativity from a strategic perspective rather than a designer’s. And, I actually went to college for it and stayed in it.

From there, my career took me to the agency world. I was recruited by a data agency to help build out digital marketing capabilities. And, again, dating myself – I fell in love with agency life. The pace, the variety, the brilliant and hardworking people…it just fit.

Then came life. A major personal shift made me pause my career and refocus on my family. When I was ready to step back in, I ran into the quiet but very real wall that so many women face: ageism. I was experienced, qualified and still being underestimated. I knew I wanted to chart my own path, but I didn’t have the desire to start something from scratch.

Then, one day sitting on the beach with my brother, he looked at me and said, “You need to do your own thing.” I told him, I know… but I don’t want to build it from zero. The next day, he walked down to the beach, showed me a listing on his phone, and said, “Then buy this agency.” In that moment, something clicked but I won’t lie, it was a little terrifying. Taking that leap felt huge, and the risk was real. I had never even considered buying an agency before, but somehow it made perfect sense. And that’s how I came to Scream Agency.

I am a leader who believes business can be a force for good and that the best way to lead is from the heart, while of course bringing all the business acumen, strategy, and experience needed to get results. At Scream, we are a full-service creative and branding studio, as well as a strategic performance marketing partner. Be Seen. Be Heard. Be Good isn’t just our motto; it’s our heartbeat. We help people and brands find their voice, make an impact, and use marketing as a tool for something bigger than profit.

And that’s how I got here, from fashion class to dial-up internet to leading a purpose-driven agency I love.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? Definitely not, does anyone actually have one? If so, I want to meet them. Owning a business is full of twists, unexpected bumps and responsibilities you can’t fully prepare for like being accountable for your team’s livelihoods and wellbeing. I didn’t fully realize how challenging and important that is. I’m lucky to have an amazing team, and it’s crucial to me that they are well-compensated, have a real say in what we do, how we deliver and how we grow. Protecting that and making it work day-to-day is no small feat, but it’s worth every moment.

The most rewarding part of overcoming challenges is the validation that we’ve built something really good. Our team feels it, our clients see it but when you’re in the middle of a challenge, it can feel completely overwhelming. Those moments make the wins feel that much sweeter.

As for handling stress, my non-negotiable is the gym. My kids know it, my friends know it, my team knows it and if I had a life partner, they’d know it too. That daily hour grounds me, recharges me and works it all out. Living in Colorado helps too, our state is one giant inspirational playground. Whether it’s hiking, mountain biking, hitting the slopes, or chasing waterfalls (I’m a total sucker for those), there’s always a way to reconnect and reset find inspiration and recharge creativity.

And for a funny or ironic setback, we’re so focused on delivering for our clients that our own website and social media don’t reflect the work we actually do. It’s like the cobbler who makes the best shoes in town…but wears ratty shoes themself. Humbling, a little ironic, and a reminder that even the pros sometimes need to step back and take care of themselves.
