Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Murray.
Hi Patty, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Bianca and Patty met through a mutual friend in the trail running community and discovered they had additional mutual friends and colleagues from San Francisco, where they both graduated from CIIS. We realized we had a shared passion for couples therapy and a desire to help other clinicians expand their interest in couples work. Bianca had the idea to create a couples center focused on progressive and modern approaches.
Bianca then invited Patty to launch the Denver Couples Center. We have since grown to include four additional clinicians, host regular networking events, and are launching a workshop series dedicated to sex and sexuality.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a center or group practice presents a unique set of challenges compared to running a solo private practice. While we both have over five years of successful private practice experience, establishing the couples center involved significant new learning, beyond just the initial overhead.
We quickly realized that marketing approaches needed to be different, and we had to implement more sophisticated operational systems. Navigating a new professional relationship as business partners was entirely new territory for us, even as we consider ourselves “relational processing junkies.”
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Denver Couples Center?
We are a therapy practice specializing in relationship support. We consistently receive feedback from clients seeking therapists who are actively engaged and directive, rather than those who “just listen.” Our therapists are specifically trained to provide compassionate yet direct guidance.
Our expertise includes communication issues, sex therapy, and supporting non-traditional relationships such as ethically non-monogamous (ENM) and polyamorous couples, as well as LGBTQ+ couples. Our brand emphasizes a progressive approach—not politically, but in terms of innovative ideas, inclusivity, and addressing complex relationship dynamics beyond conventional solutions.
We offer both online and in-person therapy options to best suit our clients’ needs.
What does success mean to you?
We believe success is defined by the impact we make. This includes witnessing positive change and growth in our clients, seeing our team’s knowledge and confidence develop, and observing how our center has expanded its reach to support more people in strengthening their relationships, which are often the most crucial aspect of our lives.
