Exploring Life & Business with Sami Heller of New Moon Refillery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sami Heller.

Sami, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
New Moon Refillery is turning four in December! While our original idea was to make a zero waste grocery store, we have pivoted to focus on just personal care and cleaning products.

We have had a lot of iterations along our journey. We started off doing delivery and pop-up events in 2022, and then moved into our first physical space in the spring of 2024. We then opened our standalone storefront in Lakewood in September 2024, which is currently our only location.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We’ve definitely had some hurdles along the way, but they’ve all taught us important lessons.

Only offering delivery made it a bit hard to communicate our concept. Refilling is new to a lot of people, so adding a delivery component to the mix didn’t always resonate. We still offer delivery for convenience, but most of our customers come into the store.

Another challenge was having two locations. It became unsustainable over time, and focusing on our Belmar storefront has been a great move for us!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
New Moon Refillery is a zero waste & refill shop located in the Belmar area of Lakewood, CO. Our goal is to reduce single-use plastic packaging by providing you with alternatives!

We have two main categories: eco-friendly swaps and refillable products. Swaps include bamboo toothbrushes, reusable paper towels, compostable floss, and much more.

We also provide over 80 products in a refillable format. Think of refills like the bulk section of the grocery store, but with soap. You can bring your own container into the shop or buy one from us (we also have free ones!). Whatever container you choose, you can fill it with as much or as little product as you’d like.

New to refilling? We are always more than happy to help you refill your containers and walk you through the process!

Something that sets us apart as a refill shop is that we love data! At the end of each year, we’ll send you a personalized dashboard where you can view how many bottles you saved from the landfill, and more! It’s basically our version of Spotify Wrapped that is based on your actual purchase history with us!

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson we’ve learned is to be confident in our top priorities. There are a lot of gray areas in environmentalism, and there are a lot of ways to go about navigating them.

Every refill shop has something unique about it, and that’s what makes them all awesome!
