Exploring Life & Business with Sarah Umbach of Studio Pilates International Superior

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Umbach.

Hi Sarah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My husband Don and I both grew up in Michigan and have known each other since the fourth grade. We stayed in Michigan for college, then lived in Northern California, Chicago, and Los Angeles before spending five years in Asia as expats working for Netflix.

After many years of working for large organizations – Netflix, Universal Studios, etc – we decided to do something more entrepreneurial. We both had always thought about opening our own business, since we both grew up in Family Owned businesses.

We discovered Studio Pilates International while we were living in Sydney Australia, up in the northern beaches (Manly Beach) while working for Netflix.

Looking at the gap in the market for Pilates in Boulder, we felt it was the right time to bring the Studio Pilates franchise to the Front Range of Colorado.

We launched our studio (in Superior) on June 7th, 2025 and so far the response from the community and our clients has been wonderful. We’re so thankful to our contractors Kahn Construction and the Town of Superior helping us make connections and their incredible support of small businesses coming to Main Street in Downtown Superior.

We’re excited to be opening three Studio Pilates locations in Superior and Boulder over the next few years. When we’re not working on our new business venture, you can find us skiing, hiking, and enjoying Colorado’s natural beauty with our Bernese Mountain Dogs.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Finding, leasing and building the space. Each county/community in Colorado has its own nuances and we had very specific size/location requirements.

So many learnings along the way! This was our first time working with a commercial contractor, opening our own business and building out our Fitness team. Studio Pilates International provided great support in guiding us through the steps, I don’t think we could have done this on our own.

So many of the lessons learned, but were still positive experiences as new business owners and only make us stronger and more confident when we build out our next ones.

An instructor is always present to ensure you are performing the moves in a safe, effective way to target the intended muscles and get maximum results. Our friendly instructors can also tailor the exercises adding more or less spring resistance and any modifications needed, regardless if you’re a beginner, intermediate or pro!

Also – we’ve owned a home in Boulder County for 10 years. We love the natural beauty of the area, the vibrant music scene and the healthy lifestyle that attracts so many others to this area.

What do we love most about Colorado?
– The beautiful scenery, access to biking, skiing and hiking just outside our door.

What are some of your favorites – foods, local businesses, or brands – in the Boulder, Denver area or throughout Colorado?
– We love stopping in the little mountain towns in Colorado, anywhere from Nederland, Minturn, Leadville or Buena Vista to grab a beer, walk the dogs and or get some food along our adventures.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Spending time outdoors and with our 3 dogs!
