Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonny Miles, MD
Hi Sonny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a small city in Southern California with lots of animals and lots of sunshine. I grew up thinking about health, healing, and wellness. My mom owned a natural skincare company and became an acupuncturist when I was in high school, and I was exposed to the work of amazing physician healers like Dr. Andrew Weil and Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona when I was in my teens. I went to MIT for undegrad and studied neuroscience. Then I went to Paraguay and served as a Peace Corps volunteer. It was there that I decided to attend medical school and become a physician. Living in a rural, underserved community allowed me to experience both the beauty and power of traditional healing methods and the need for modern medicine (and how amazing medicine can be in certain situations). I attended medical school at the University of California at San Francisco and completed my internal medicine residency there as well. After finishing that part of my training, I worked as a hospitalist for Indian Health Services in Gallup, New Mexico. While working in the hospital there, I wanted more tools to help people stay well and so I began the Andrew Weil Fellowship in Integrative Medicine. I also fell in love with the conversations around serious illness and end of life care and decided to pursue training in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. I completed my Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship at the University of California at San Diego. We then moved to Colorado and I practiced palliative care and palliative oncology. I loved the work but felt like I had more to give than I could give working in the medical system. I founded Healing with Intention Integrative Medicine in late 2022. I have been on a journey to create a whole person healing space and practice where I can use all of my training and really meet people where they are at and use the tools that resonate with them so that they can heal.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
On every new journey, there are challenges. Some of the challenges are external, but a lot of them are internal. I’ve had to learn a lot about being an entrepreneur. I’m learning to be visible in the world. I’m learning to believe deeply in myself. I’m learning who I am as a healer. All of these take and also help build resilience, inner strength, and courage. I feel grateful that I have wonderful people in my life to help me work through all of the challenges.
As you know, we’re big fans of Healing with Intention Integrative Medicine. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Healing with Intention Integrative Medicine is the boutique integrative medicine practice that I founded in Loveland, Colorado. My intention is to create a healing space – environment matters in healing – where I can connect deeply with people and support them on their own healing journey. I believe that a significant component of healing is reconnecting to ourselves and our intuitive wisdom and making changes – big and small – in our lives that allow us to heal. At the same time, we need to support and rebalance the physical body which can be done with food, movement, herbs or supplements, mind-body medicine, or other modalities. My goal is to partner closely with people and help them transform their lives a little bit at a time. I am passionate about self-empowerment, living intentionally and living what matters most.
I believe that healing and health are truly about returning to wholeness and they are processes that continue over time. I see patients in person in Loveland or can work with anyone in Colorado via telehealth.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Northern Colorado. I feel so lucky to live in such a beautiful place with amazing landscapes and wildlife. I have an amazing community of people here who are really trying to make the world a better place a little at a time and inspire me.
