Exploring Life & Business with Steven Ritter of T.A.C.T. Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Ritter.

Hi Steven, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I come from a family of firefighters whom have always encouraged me to help others. I spend about 8 years as a paramedic in Aurora and worked as a volunteer firefighter south of Denver Metro. It was after that I decided to use my business degree and started working corporate for a hospital system. Starting in 2020 I was laid off which was the change I needed to be working for myself. After a couple of failed self-employment attempts I was offered a firefighter job outside Steamboat. My dream job in the mountains was great, but I was tired of working long shifts. I wanted to be my own boss. I went all in on buying a franchise. When I talked to Matt Lovasz (as seen on the TV show “Hoarders”) the founder of T.A.C.T. I knew he was someone I could trust. It was obvious he wanted to help others also. I went all in January of 2025 with being fully open April 2025. Owning my own company has giving me the ability to schedule my own start and start training to one day summit Everest which is a dream of mine.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business is never a smooth road. I started this journey on my own. I am very close with my family and did not tell them until I was 5 months in. Hiring, equipment, finding that first job was all tough. Being a franchise has a huge benefit of being able to ask other franchises for advice. We are all on a group chat that is full of great information of what to do and what not to do. I could not be happier with the help from our founder and the other businesses. I could not have started my own business without them.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business does Biohazard Mitigation. Think of it as any construction (industrial or residential) that requires full hazard material suits is what we do. Anything from extreme mold or asbestos to crime scenes or major hoarding jobs. What sets me apart from my competition is I do not just send my employees to a job and expect them to do it all. I like to be hands on to make sure everything is done correctly and safely. I have a lot of experience with people on their worst day as a paramedic. I think that helps me help people during these stressful situations.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
We live in a city that has a lot of entrepreneurs that support each other. Everyone lives by the work hard, play hare mentality with outdoor activities. Besides being expensive there is nothing dislike about Denver.
