Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Wenrick
Taylor, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Taylor and I’m a chiropractor and owner of Innerlux Healing with my business partner Courtney in Denver, Colorado. My journey with chiropractic started 31 years ago when my parents brought me to one at just 6 months old to prevent ear infections (and I haven’t had one since!) Courtney’s story started much differently. Following a car accident as a teenager, she experienced debilitating migraines and was prescribed painkillers and muscle relaxers. Her doctor told her parents this was her only option and would most likely need them for the rest of her life. After developing a dependency on these, her mom knew there had to be another option which is when she brought her to see a chiropractor. After just a few adjustments, her migraines and pain were gone and she was able to get off all medications. To this day she no longer has migraines and continues to be medication free!
In our combined 10+ years of practice, we’ve seen firsthand the power of chiropractic and its ability to help people heal. However, the longer we’re in practice we’ve realized that most of people’s chronic pain is a result of unresolved trauma that gets stored in the body. More often than not, physical ailments are a result of mental/emotional stress that is unable to be worked through and processed. Chiropractic is an amazing tool to help with pain and discomfort, but we know that we can’t affect the body without affecting the brain and vice versa. This is why we started our own practice so we can provide our patients with different tools to address their unique needs. By co-managing with other professionals, we will be able to provide both physical and mental health services in our office to help people achieve ultimate healing, in turn allowing for true authentic expression, liberation, and enlightenment within themselves. We believe that when people prioritize their health, it creates a ripple effect that can lead to a more vibrant, engaged, and happier society which is what the world desperately needs.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We became very aware of the rollercoaster of small business right from the beginning. Our biggest challenge we’ve faced so far is the Denver permit system. Unfortunately, we were unaware of the lengthy process and quickly learned that it was one of the worst in the country for granting business permits. Due to this, our timeline for opening has been pushed back 7 months. This setback was obviously not accounted for when we started the process and we had to continue paying for all of our expenses. As a small business that hadn’t even opened its doors yet, this was almost detrimental to the future of our office.
Another challenge our business has faced is that we’re doing something that’s never been done before in the chiropractic world. By providing chiropractic adjustments and integrative therapies, we will be fully encompassing mental and physical health under one roof. As exciting and groundbreaking as this is, it will not come without its unique challenges we’ll need to navigate as we learn more in practice. Lastly, we’ve experienced the stress of being a new business starting from ground zero. Chiropractic offices are unique because we are one of the few medical professions that do not get direct referrals from general practitioners/providers. Because of this, we are entirely responsible for bringing patients into our office and starting from the ground up.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Over the last decade we’ve seen a significant shift in how people view healthcare and more are realizing the importance of the mind-body connection and how intricately connected they really are. Not only this, but many are seeking alternative options to the mainstream healthcare system. Our society has never been sicker and the need for safer, holistic options for healing is becoming more crucial than ever before. This is why Dr. Courtney and I are passionate about changing the status quo of healthcare. We’re chiropractors on a mission to combine chiropractic care with neurotherapeutic services to create a space for whole-body healing.
Additionally, both of us are trained and certified through the ICPA and the Webster technique and specialize in taking care of prenatal and pediatric patients. The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic adjustment that restores balance to the bones and soft tissues of the low back and pelvis. Doing so helps create more room in the pelvis, allowing baby to get into the optimal position for birth. Additionally, this technique helps reduce aches and pains of pregnancy, reduces the need for intervention during birth, reduces labor and delivery times, and supports optimal birth outcomes.
Lastly, we practice corrective chiropractic care which focuses on reducing misalignments and curvatures in the spine. We take digital X-rays in house which allow us to make specific corrections based on objective findings and degenerative changes in the spine. Every adjustment is tailored to each person’s unique needs in order to achieve the best outcomes possible.
What’s next?
Our future plans include offering mountain retreats for individuals seeking deeper healing. Research shows that your brain is the most neuroplastic (susceptible for change and re-wiring pathways) the 20 minutes following a chiropractic adjustment. In addition, addressing specific brain patterns is a crucial part of identifying the root cause and further creating beneficial neuroplastic effects. We believe that combining these two can create profound healing outcomes for individuals.
Additionally, we plan on creating a program for new chiropractic graduates and chiropractors opening their own office. We will provide them with the step-by-step tools to acquire their loan all the way to opening their doors.
