Exploring Life & Business with Terrelya Hoskins of The Farming Nutritionist

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrelya Hoskins.

Hi Terrelya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started with a health scare in the beginning of a pandemic. A shutdown happened and Stay At Home was inacted. It was the end of March 2020 when I had my first of many ER visits. I went to every specialist you can think of: PCP (primary care physician), Cardiologist, Neurologist, ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat), MRIs, CAT scans, ultrasounds… you name it. I went to them all. The doctors pretty much told me it was all stress and anxiety. It was all in my head. They prescribed me everything under the sun, including antidepressants/anti-anxiety medicines to just “calm me down”. I didn’t take any of them because I knew that wasn’t the issue.

That was what led me to my health journey. I began to do so much research just desperate to find answers to what was going on. Then a friend told me to look into the possibility of parasites. Now it wasn’t a parasitic issue, but that suggestion led me to studying about gut health. I began to do holistic remedies to healing and managing my condition. It turned out my stomach stopped digesting properly. I went to see an Acupuncturist to start digestive treatments every week and saw a massage therapist to assist in stress reduction, mental health, and removal of toxins. Throughout this time, I also saw a mental health therapist weekly to heal past traumas, as it can be a huge factor in gut issues as well. I started what we called an “elimination diet” as well to figure out what foods trigger my condition. Everything worked well. So, well then when I finally got to see a Gastroenterologist for an endoscopy, they didn’t see anything wrong.

During this time of healing, I began to study the benefits of going plant-based. While watching the documentary “Invisible Vegan”, I saw a woman that spoke with the title “Certified Holistic Nutritionist” under her name. I became curious as to what that was. The definition was: Holistic Nutritionists are specialized nutritionists that heal patients using natural foods and products instead of conventional medical treatments. They also seek to remedy the entire or “whole” person (mind, body, and soul) as opposed to during isolated symptoms. Based on my healing journey, I knew I could help educate more people due to my experience. So, when I read the definition of Holistic Nutritionist, I knew that was my calling. I immediately started seeking and researching accredited schools that taught the Holistic Nutrition program and came across Bauman College. I started school April 7, 2021 (and set to graduate July 13, 2022).

During this time, I also started gardening due to COVID boredom. That and as a stress reliever considering the times we were in. I discovered that I had a pretty good green thumb. And that’s how I became the Plant Lady. I’m in my third year of growing and will be growing 35+ crops. Since then, I have combined my love of growing fruits, veggies, and herbs and married it with Holistic Nutrition, and formed The Farming Nutritionist.

I met Steven Cuoco on Fanbase and he has helped me to focus on and develop my brand. I started the podcast in early December “Let Me Tell Ya…with Lady T” with the platform of health and wealth. But to be honest, I created it for practice. I wanted to speak about health, nutrition, and gardening on a wider scale but knew I was a little bit on the shy side. Plus, I needed to develop my voice. So, I started the podcast as a way to practice my voice and delivery. I ran into Steven Cuoco again on Fanbase a month later and he spoke to me about taking my talents to Power 98.5 Satellite Radio. I graciously accepted and that is how a medical scare turned into a Holistic Nutritionist, Plant Lady, and Radio Host and Media Personality.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The main struggle was figuring out my own health issues, honestly. Even though I have a flare-up every now and then (still trying to figure out what my stomach can or can’t digest), I have now managed it very well.

Other than that, the only thing I can say is trusting and believing in the process. If I didn’t receive Steven Cuoco when it happened, or create a podcast, or allow fear to hold me back, I wouldn’t continue onto the path I’m going which is up from here.

We’ve been impressed with The Farming Nutritionist, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Farming Nutritionist specializes in the holistic way of life. We can do one on one consultations for those looking to improve their overall quality of life whether it be: Digestive concerns/gut health, PCOS and women hormones, blood sugar imbalance, sugar cravings, skin complications, weightloss, and more. We also provide meal plans for our clients, a place where you can purchase natural hygiene products, garden and nutrition blog, vegan/plant-based recipes, and I just recently announced a monthly cooking class where we are going to teach how to cook vegan foods. Pretty soon, I will be having monthly gardening classes as well. Stay tuned.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
It will be a challenge for sure. But again, trust the process. I wish I knew to just trust the process in the beginning instead of trying to force things.
