Today we’d like to introduce you to Therese Revitte.
Hi Therese, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I guess you could say I’ve been interested in healthy food and nutrition from the beginning. I’m a Denver native and my mom grew up on a farm east of Denver. When I was growing up, my folks had a big vegetable garden every year.
I would spend hours sitting in the garden. We ate differently than a lot of my friends. Most of what we ate was homemade, with lots of variety and whole foods. I developed an interest in a natural way of eating and living. It made sense to me that natural was better than the packaged convenience foods my friends were eating. We had a Vitamin Cottage (now Natural Grocers) nearby, and I became a regular visitor there during my teen years.
As I moved through life, I always had my organic food garden whenever I had space. Looking back, I thought I was living a pretty healthy lifestyle, but there were plenty of ways I wasn’t taking care of myself. Fast forward, I ended up with an autoimmune disease in my 40’s, wondering if I’d ever feel well again.
Having a debilitating autoimmune disease was life-changing. It set me on a winding path of learning more about how nutrition can heal the body, about how broken our food and agricultural system is, and about what holistic health means. I went to Nutrition Therapy Institute and became a Master Nutrition Therapist. Then, I became board-certified in Holistic Nutrition®. I opened my Live Bright Nutrition Therapy practice in 2017 as my second career and it has evolved to include both my gardening and nutrition training.
I’ve since taken a deep dive into functional nutrition, learning to use functional tests to gather information about my clients. These tests include GI mapping, food sensitivity testing, micronutrient testing, hormone assessments, blood chemistry testing, and more. This is the “special sauce” of my practice, allowing me to personalize each individual’s protocol based on what is happening in their unique body.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
What I do requires knowledge and the ability to deeply analyze what is happening in a person’s body and come up with a plan that will best help the person feel better and achieve their goals. But that’s the easier part for me!
The hard part has been not having any training in running a business. I’ve learned bit by bit what I need to do to run my practice. There are so many aspects to it, and I’ve added layers one by one. When I could afford it, I took a basic business course and that helped a lot.
Another challenge came after I graduated from NTI when my husband had an autoimmune attack. My attention turned to helping him heal for several months. This slowed down building my practice but also taught me so much about functional medicine and honing my skills.
Finally, I’m still challenged with explaining to people what makes me unique as a functional nutritionist, versus other nutritionists, dieticians, or health coaches. Most people haven’t heard of functional medicine/nutrition, and conventional medicine doctors are sometimes skeptical of it.
Yet this form of nutrition and lifestyle therapy is extremely powerful by itself and in conjunction with conventional medicine.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a functional nutritionist and my virtual practice is Live Bright Nutrition Therapy. I help my clients restore and optimize their health through individualized, targeted nutrition and lifestyle plans.
I offer an array of services to serve my clients’ needs. I offer a basic Nutrition Overhaul package, a 14-day Reset Cleanse, an annual Optimal Wellness Membership, and a deep-dive 6-month Restore Package. I use functional testing to identify the root causes of my client’s issues and create customized protocols.
I specialize in autoimmunity, gut health, hormones, and balancing all body systems. It is a holistic approach that touches on the pillars of nutrition, stress management, sleep, exercise, and connections to people and nature.
I don’t teach a quick fix. I teach life-long strategies for continuing to feel your best. What sets me apart is that I’ve had the extra training and life experience to work with autoimmune clients, and my autoimmune clients have had great results with my program.
Some of my clients struggle with life-altering health issues, and seeing them achieve success through our work together is extremely gratifying. Our work together can be life-changing for some people! My greatest joy is when a client who was struggling comes to me after our work and tells me how they’ve gotten part of their life back!
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Trust in your talents! If you love doing something, you’re probably good at it. Especially for women, imposter syndrome is a real thing and can hold you back. But even if you know you have more to learn, trust that you still know more than most people about the subject you love and dig into it.
And be sure to charge a fair amount for your work – don’t undercompensate yourself just because you don’t feel 100% confident yet.
Also, know what you’re not good at. What do you need to learn more about? In my case, it was about the business aspects of marketing and running a business. Of course, you can hire people to do that work, but many of us don’t start with enough money to hire other people.
Don’t ignore it. Go find a way to get better at it. It may be uncomfortable, but keep at it and turn that weakness into a strength. It’s necessary to be out of your comfort zone as you learn and grow.
