Today we’d like to introduce you to Trina Mauchmar
Hi Trina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi, I’m Trina, a licensed clinical social worker and a certified ADHD therapist in Colorado. I got my start as a social worker 18 years ago working for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Michigan. New adventures and a calling to the mountains brought me to Colorado where I continued my social work career in community mental health. I pursued my graduate degree in social work right here at the University of Denver, and have now worked as a therapist in the Denver/Metro area for the past 11 years. The majority of my career was focused on serving the community in the areas of mental health, substance use disorders and homeless services. I participated in the National Health Service Corp helping increase access to quality mental health care in communities with significant health professional shortages. My passion to help others become their best selves and live healthier, more fulfilled lives continues in my private practice today.
“My Colorado Therapist” is my private practice that emerged through my own personal and unique journey with adult ADHD and is dedicated to all of the ADHD Coloradon’s out there who are misunderstood, misdiagnosed or struggling undiagnosed.
I got decent grades in high school, I made it through college and have a rewarding career, so I must not have ADHD, right?! Well, like many women with ADHD I flew under the radar undiagnosed for far to long…working 3x’s harder than my neuro-typical colleagues to keep up, masking with the best of them, and dealing with the associated stigma.
All of this has helped me develop my niche as a therapist and build a practice that feels authentic to me. Along the way, it became obvious that there is a big gap in clinical care for neurodivergent’s struggling with ADHD, and how difficult it can be to find a therapist who will diagnose it, treat it or who really understands the complexities of the neurobiological disorder and its co-existing conditions. I find it very rewarding to help other humans feel understood in world that is not designed for them.
In my free timeI can be found at the kickball fields, a local bluegrass concert or out hitting the slopes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. It’s no secret that a career in social work can lead to burn-out. Heavy caseloads, long hours, staff turnover, poor working environments, compassion fatigue, low wages..I’ve experienced them all.
The covid pandemic presented a new set of challenges; the demand for support grew exponentially, and the ways in which we delivered services changed rapidly. I suspect we will continue to see the mental health impacts of the pandemic for years to to come.
Unfortunately they don’t teach you how to run a business in therapy school . There was a lot that I needed to learn on my own and with a little help from my friends aka colleagues and coaches. I’m happy to say that I have found the “sweet spot” and am successfully balancing taking care of myself, while helping others.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
