Today we’d like to introduce you to Trisha Spillane
Hi Trisha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
First off, thank you for the opportunity to chat with you. Normally, I’m telling the story of others – so you’ve turned the tables on me!
I’m Trisha, Founder & Principal of Simply Put Communications, a boutique communications collective driving awareness for brands through a creative and efficient approach. I’m based in Massachusetts, but I’ve recently had the amazing opportunity to dive deeper into the Denver market for a current client. And have been introduced to such a welcoming community of media, entrepreneurs, and community members.
My story? Sure, Simply Put Communications is young – we’ve been operating for only 15 months. But, my experience in marketing communications spans almost 20 years.
Shall we take it way, way back?!
Shortly after completing my BA in Communications from Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, I jetted off to the happiest place on earth and embarked on an internship that was truly magical and prepared me for a world outside of fantasy.
With a little pixie dust and some guidance from a handful of Fairy Godmothers, I landed my first “big girl job”. Enter Hearts On Fire, The World’s Most Perfectly Cut Diamond. There, I spent 7 years learning (read: making mistakes), growing (aka: getting uncomfortable), and soaking up (ie: injecting myself) into anything and everything. Realizing quickly that the diamond wasn’t the only thing natural, real and rare. It was the people.
Transitioning to Swarovski, I had an eye on obtaining global experience and an objective of gaining insight into how various retail distribution networks operated.
From owned stores, licensed boutiques, independent retail, e-commerce, to travel retail, I soon realized that the brand must always come through, but the strategies and tactics may need to differ. #knowyouraudience
As someone who grew up (digitally) navigating the Oregon Trail, I knew I wanted to enhance my digital literacy. I joined the immensely talented team at Rue La La, a leading ecommerce site, and brought forth partnerships that tapped new audiences allowing for additional website sessions, new members, and incremental revenue.
They say you can’t go home again, but well-behaved women rarely make history. Thus, I returned to Hearts On Fire ultimately becoming the VP, Marketing & Communications to lead the projects, programs, and activities I had once supported.
Seven additional years under my belt and a different perspective on “change” led me into the next chapter of my story.
Welcome to Simply Put.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! Is anything in life smooth sailing? There are always peaks and valleys (pun intended). I’ve worked in the corporate world for almost 20 years – and moving into owning your own business comes with a lot of twists and turns.
Some include:
Technology: not having an IT department on speed dial when your technology doesn’t want to play nice….
Relationships: keeping your network strong when you’re not sitting together around a conference table….
Scope: sticking to it…
Brand-building: carving out time to work on your OWN brand. There is so much I want to do with Simply Put
Communications, but I realize (and continue to realize) that it is progress over perfection and it’s OK to evolve, change, and refine over time….
And, that’s just a few examples. But, betting on yourself? Worth it. #simplyput
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Simply Put is a boutique communications collective and we pride ourselves on acting as an extension to your team; caring about the details and taking ownership of the results.
We work closely with your team to integrate strategic media, partnerships and events into your brand strategy. It’s a crowded marketplace and our goal is to elevate your brand through creative storytelling through a variety of approaches.
Launching a new product? We’ll create a strategy and a communications plan to get the word out.
Hosting an event? We got you – we’ll develop the event so no detail is left behind and we’ll run with those ever-changing, last minute, and complex event elements.
Need a brand ambassador? We’ll research, negotiate, and provide the perfect personality for your needs.
These are just examples, but what makes Simply Put special is that we can get creative and tailor an approach that is perfect for you.
What’s next?
Right now, no BIG changes are in the works! I’m focused on my current partners and looking forward to bringing on additional clients.
Any immediate changes will be around efficiency, refinement, and implementing key learnings.
But, who knows – that’s today!
Tomorrow could bring something completely different. And that’s what keeps it interesting.
