Exploring Life & Business with Zoe Whitmore of KW Capital Advisors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Whitmore.

Zoe Whitmore

Hi Zoe, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a house where entrepreneurship and passion lived under the same roof. My father owned children’s clothing stores, but his true love was the capital markets. Every morning before school, we watched CNBC while eating breakfast. I didn’t realize it then, but those moments were planting the seeds of the career I would one day build. When I was in high school, he closed his stores and made a career change to wealth management, his true passion. I got to see what it looked like when someone aligned their work with their passion. He had a renewed energy I hadn’t seen in him, and he seemed happier and more fulfilled than ever.
I went on to study business at Arizona State University and then began my career at Charles Schwab. My first day placing trades as a broker was in the fall of 2007, the U.S equity markets were crashing. Clients were panicked on the other end of the line and there I was, being thrown into the center of financial chaos.
What surprised me wasn’t the pressure of it all; it was what I learned about myself. I actually enjoyed this. Not necessarily the intensity, but I enjoyed being someone who is confident & organized, helping people feel grounded, even in moments of uncertainty. I realized that what I was enjoying most was not executing trades, it was being in a position to help someone through seasons of both fear and hope.
After four years at Schwab and earning my MBA from the University of Colorado Denver, I left to join my dad’s team, something I had hoped to do for a long time. I was grateful that by then, I had built a foundation on my own. I understood my strengths and knew that I still had a lot to learn, which was exciting. Most importantly, I knew why this work mattered to me and that I was going to enjoy a long career in it if I was fortunate enough.
When I passed the CFP exam with a three-month-old baby at home, it became clear that my future would be a balancing act between career ambition and family life.
When I look back now, I’m proud of the business I’ve built and the people who have trusted me with their dreams and their financial futures. Many of them feel like family today. It makes me so happy to think of all the fun I’ve had along the way. Building a business and raising a family is hard work and the days are long and busy. But it’s completely fulfilling and so much fun. I’m excited for the future and what lies ahead. My team is growing, my clients are evolving, and the work continues to deepen. I know there is so much more impact to make, so many more families to serve, and so many more chapters yet to be written.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Working as a young woman in the financial industry had its own set of struggles. The office was filled with men and I would look around at events and I would be one of a handful of women in a room filled with hundreds of men. I found that this ultimately ended up being an advantage in my career. There were moments of exhaustion, doubt, and juggling more than seemed possible, but those seasons taught me resilience and made me stronger. I didn’t want to choose between being present for my children and being a great financial planner, so I had to learn how to become both. That balance, though hard won, is what I am most proud of.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
