Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Castillo.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
For two decades, I sat on the other side of the desk. I climbed the ranks from a field adjuster to a claims manager at one of the nation’s largest insurance carriers. I hit my 20-year milestone in September 2023, but the industry I celebrated that day was not the same one I had joined two decades prior.
During my final five years in the corporate world, I witnessed a disturbing shift in the insurance landscape. The industry’s core philosophy had pivoted. We went from a culture of “How do we best serve the policyholder?” to “How do we protect the shareholder’s bottom line?” Customer service was replaced by cost-containment algorithms, and “fair value” became “the absolute minimum we can pay.”
In October 2023, a 6% reduction in force at my company provided the catalyst for a life-changing decision. I had the experience to walk into a management role at any other carrier, but my conscience wouldn’t let me. I had seen too many policyholders left under-indemnified by a system designed to out-wait and out-negotiate them.
I decided to take my 20 years of “insider” knowledge—the secret math, the software loopholes, and the tactical denials—and give it back to the consumer. I founded Total Loss Champions to bridge the massive information gap between the billion-dollar insurer and the individual car owner.
Today, I don’t work for shareholders. I work for John Q. I work for the family whose “total loss” shouldn’t mean a total financial disaster. I am a licensed public adjuster and a certified appraiser, but more importantly, I am an advocate for the standard of service that the insurance industry used to stand for.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Leaving a 20-year career wasn’t just a change of scenery; it was a total reinvention. I spent two decades mastering the complexities of insurance claims, but I quickly realized that being an expert adjuster is very different from being a business owner. Suddenly, I wasn’t just managing files; I was managing marketing, operations, and the weight of being my own boss. The early days were a humbling departure from the predictability of corporate life.
I knew that to serve my clients with the highest level of integrity, I had to build my business on a foundation of professional excellence. I reached out to the Larimer County Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the Better Business Bureau (BBB). These organizations weren’t just resources; they were my mentors. They helped me translate my passion for consumer advocacy into a structured, sustainable business model.
Every lesson I’ve learned about entrepreneurship—from operational efficiency to ethical marketing—has had a single goal: to be a more effective weapon for my clients. By solidifying my position as a strong, independent business owner, I am better equipped to stand toe-to-toe with multi-billion dollar insurers. My growth as a founder isn’t about me; it’s about ensuring that when a member of our community faces a total loss, they have a champion who is as professional and organized as the companies we are challenging.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Auto Total Loss Champions Auto TLC?
At Total Loss Champions, we act as a specialized “check and balance” for the auto insurance industry. We are consumer advocates who step in when a vehicle is declared a total loss or has suffered a significant loss in value after an accident. I specialize in two high-stakes areas: Total Loss Settlements and Diminished Value Claims.
Essentially, we ensure that the “Actual Cash Value” on your insurance check matches the “Real World Price” it takes to replace your car. I do this primarily by invoking the Right to Appraisal, a powerful but often ignored clause in insurance contracts that allows for an independent valuation when the carrier and the consumer disagree.
What truly sets us apart is my “Inside-Out” perspective. Having spent 20 years as a claims manager for a major carrier, I don’t have to guess how insurance companies think—I already know. While many in this space are just “car guys,” I am a Licensed Public Adjuster. This means I am legally authorized to negotiate on behalf of the policyholder and hold insurance companies accountable to state regulations and fair claims practices. We don’t just provide an opinion of value; we provide a legally backed demand for justice.
I am most proud of our integrity and tenacity. Our brand isn’t just about “getting more money”—it’s about restoring a sense of fairness. I am incredibly proud of the fact that we’ve built a reputation for being the “expert’s expert.” Body shops and attorneys refer their toughest cases to us because they know we have the data and the backbone to stand up to billion-dollar legal departments.
If there is one thing I want your readers to know, it is this: The first offer from your insurance company is a starting point, not a final verdict. Most people don’t realize they have a contractual right to hire their own expert. Whether you are a parent trying to replace the family SUV or a car enthusiast protecting the value of a classic, you don’t have to navigate this alone. Total Loss Champions provides the professional weight you need to ensure you aren’t leaving thousands of dollars on the table.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
In my world, success is measured by the “Delta”—the difference between the insurance company’s low-ball offer and the true market value I recover for my client. Every time I secure an additional $2,000, $5,000, or $10,000, I’m not just winning a technical argument; I am preventing a financial catastrophe for a family. Success is the total amount of money I’ve put back into the pockets of consumers that would have otherwise been kept as corporate profit.
Success is when my phone rings because a local body shop manager or a Personal Injury attorney tells their client, “I won’t let you settle this claim until you call Total Loss Champions.” After 20 years in the industry, being recognized as the “expert’s expert” in my community is the highest form of professional achievement. When my reputation precedes me, I know I’ve built something of lasting value.
For the last five years of my corporate career, I felt a disconnect between my work and my values. Today, I define success as alignment. I sleep well knowing that my 20 years of “insider” knowledge is finally being used for the right reasons. Success is the freedom to look a client in the eye and know that I am 100% on their side, with no shareholders to answer to—only the person sitting across from me.
Coming from a world where everything was provided for me, I define success by the strength of the business I’ve built from scratch. Navigating the steep learning curve of entrepreneurship with the help of the SBDC and BBB has been one of my hardest but most rewarding challenges. Success is owning my time, my mission, and my future.
