Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison “Fin” Diemer
Hi Allison, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We’re a husband and wife team (Tim + Fin) small business that was started after our year long honeymoon traveling around the world. We were full time travelers and had yet to find travel gear that really worked for us. Tripped was started with the intention of making travel gear that made traveling that much easier. Starting with daypacks and moving into compression cubes that are designed to fit perfectly into a carry-on or checked bag. The business took off and we soon realized running a multimillion dollar company was challenging from our favorite Coworking Cafe in Bali… so we put down roots in our FAVORITE place, Silverthorne, CO. 90 minutes to the 6th largest airport in the world, DIA, still gets us to anywhere we want to go, and more importantly, we now live day to day with routine in the most beautiful place in the world. And after 6 continents and 50 countries, we have a pretty good idea!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building a business as digital nomads (before Starlink!) was quite a challenge! Our first year in 2017, we were moonlighting the business, working our 9-5s in Indiana, then building Tripped from 5-midnight. In 2018 after we hit our goal of making $100/day profit, we quit our jobs, moved into an RV and spent a year driving through the US to Alaska. Internet and cell service wasn’t our only challenge, building a physical goods business we were constantly needing to ship and receive product samples that we did from Amazon lockers, UPS pick up centers and campground offices. One favorite memory is picking up new laptops on a scooter in 105′ heat outside phoenix in a sandstorm wearing ski goggles.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Tripped makes travel easier. With our gear and educational packing and destination inspiration videos, packing and trip planning doesn’t have to be stressful anymore!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success has always meant freedom. Freedom to spend time how I want, freedom to live where I want, freedom to earn what I want. In corporate America, I felt “salary capped”. 4% a year? a 10% raise? Not good enough. So I went freelance. As a freelancer I had some location independence, more control over my income, but was still limited to a time-for-money structured income. I could charge whatever I wanted, but was still limited to how many clients I had the bandwidth to take on. Now, as business owners, Tim and I have created exactly the life we want, always making lifestyle decisions before business decisions. In 7 years we have come so far I don’t think we stop and think about how lucky we are enough!
