Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Newberry.
Hi Amber, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started as a yoga teacher in 2014 and then got my trauma-informed and yoga therapy certifications. From there, I began to work with women and girls with body-based trauma, such as sexual assault survivors, eating disorders, traumatic births, miscarriage, post-abortive, chronic illness, self-harm, etc…
In 2021, I decided to go back to school and I got my Masters in Social Work from the University of Southern California. I now have a private mental health practice called Beautiful and Beloved Therapy where I work with the same population for the same issues, but I get to have a more holistic approach combining mental health with body health and I have expanded to also work with depression, anxiety, and women with ADHD as well.
I also started talking to my school district in 2021, I was seeing teen girls from my local high schools for sexual assault that was happening in their school and by their peers. I have been working with the schools in my district to teach a more robust consent curriculum and they have been amazing in encouraging me, supporting me, and allowing me to be in the middle and high schools to help further consent curriculum and keep our students safe.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think the struggles come when you are sure you are not enough. Before yoga, Beautiful and Beloved was a boutique where I started selling items hand-crafted by survivors of trafficking. That was such a fun experience and I was passionate about it, but it wasn’t sustainable, I felt as though I just didn’t have the knowledge to make that business profitable.
When I moved from teaching yoga to more yoga as therapy, I felt completely out of my depth, the pain that those women shared with me and that we worked through together made me feel as though I needed to do so much more to help them.
Now having all the education and all the experience I can still sometimes feel like an imposter. That is the hardest part, there is always a way I can make myself better and I feel like I am always striving in that way.
As you know, we’re big fans of Beautiful and Beloved Therapy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
