Today we’d like to introduce you to Amelia May, Pt, Dpt
Hi Amelia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
During Covid, I had gotten furloughed from my job at the time due to being the newest therapist hired at the company I was working at. I took those 2-3 months off to really hone in on what I wanted my career as a physical therapist to look like. I wanted to go to work every day feeling passionate about the type of care I was providing, and I was just not getting that in the environment I was currently working. That is when I created my professional instagram account and dove into many continuing education courses, some of which had to do with the pelvic floor. Via instagram, I met my now boss, where we connected with each other’s content and eventually, that grew into an offer for a job interview with her company, Genesis PT & Wellness. At the end of my interview and shadowing a few patient visits with her, she offered me a job and I quickly accepted! Genesis has a vibe like nothing else I have experienced as a healthcare professional – fun, personable, caring, and individualized to the patient’s needs. On top of gaining more and more pelvic floor-related education and continuing education over the years to better my practice as a physical therapist, I also eventually took on more leadership responsibilities at our company as our team grew. First as the Dallas Director of Therapy, and now as Regional Director for all of our 8 clinics, along with being part-owner in our Colorado branch!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life is filled with ups and downs, as illustrated by my experiences during COVID. Our team grew rapidly, bringing numerous challenges, yet it also contributed significantly to my personal growth as a teammate and leader. We faced several struggles, including finding ways to keep our team members connected as we transitioned from a small group to a larger one. Additionally, community outreach became increasingly important as pelvic health therapy gained popularity. We also have had to challenge societal norms surrounding pelvic floor therapy, which can be controversial, especially as evidence-based practices continue to evolve.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Genesis PT & Wellness is a holistic pelvic health therapy group that began in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex in TX, and has most recently expanded into Denver, CO. At Genesis, we exist to pioneer an innovative & comprehensive approach that redefines the standard of healthcare and to offer an unparalleled experience to make a lasting impact for our community. We adopt a whole-person perspective to pelvic health therapy, seeing you as an individual rather than just your pain or dysfunction that focuses on one area of your body. We work with all folks that have a pelvis, at any stage or age! Common issues we treat are for joint pain, such as hips, low back, tailbone, or pelvic pain, as well as incontinence, prolapse, pregnancy/postpartum concerns, labor & delivery prep, Diastasis Recti, painful intercourse, and much more. Our commitment to personalized, one-on-one sessions ensures that every person we work with feels validated and supported as we collaboratively work toward their goals. We focus not only on alleviating pain but also on empowering individuals to reclaim their active lives—whether it’s jumping without leakage, lifting weights without discomfort, or chasing your kids around sans worries!
Additionally, our team prioritizes creating a fun, genuine, and supportive environment, fostering a positive atmosphere that enhances the healing process. We envision a future where the kind of life-changing therapy we provide at Genesis is available to everyone, everywhere.
This unique combination of customized care, innovative practices, and a vibrant team culture truly distinguishes us in the realm of pelvic health therapy.
How do you think about luck?
Oh gosh, I think both have shaped my life, right!? Luck and fate might be the same in my mind when I think about this too. Good luck was making my professional instagram during the time that I did, which lead me to meet my boss online and chat with her, leading me to the interview and job offer that has truly changed my life! Bad luck has definitely occurred many times in life, but in business I don’t know that I have viewed it that way – I feel like every thing that happens is a learning opportunity for me to grow as a person, professional, leader, etc. so I think sometimes it is more about your perspective. Along with hard work, grit and perseverance of course!
