Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Giggey.
Hi Amy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was part of the Great Resignation. I had a baby a month before COVID closures hit and I was struggling to keep up with a full-time job and the constant daycare closures. I didn’t have the financial luxury to quit, but some good friends started introducing me to clients and before I knew it, I had enough to meet my monthly expenses and enough flexibility to be there for my family.
Soon another friend decided to leave her full-time job and wanted to join forces. I was hesitant but was always someone who preferred to be on a team rather than alone. At the end of 2021, there were three of us (me + two part-time team members) and now we are closing out the year with a team of 12.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No road is without its bumps, but I do feel I have been incredibly fortunate to work with very caring and thoughtful people both on the client side, and within my team. When I left my job I was feeling really low and building your business forces you to confront your areas of low self-worth and find ways to build yourself up. For me, it’s always been about focusing on the ‘right next step’ instead of the big picture on the tough days.
Additionally, I hired a coach early on to help me minimize my mistakes and give me a sounding board. With all that said, there are days that I would sell this business for $50 and a hot dog. Thankfully, my coach asks me if I have eaten or slept before I am allowed to make any big decisions.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Talent to Team provides fractional HR services. We work with companies from 2 to 200+ employees to build and grow your people function. We use the term ‘insourced’ as we function as your VP of People, People Operations Manager, and/or HR Administrative Assistant on an hourly basis to align our goals and incentives with yours.
Where I use a coach, our clients use us to lessen the scaling bumps along the way. We provide a framework to help you choose your Talent Strategy, and align that to your Compensation Philosophy, Performance Management framework, and Employee Experience. In addition, we provide systems, process, and compliance support at our People Operations Manager level, and our HR Admin can do tactical onboarding and offboarding and/or recruiting and sourcing via LinkedIn.
A previous employer of mine used to say that he was driving the bus and while he was watching the road he was trying to look in the rearview mirror and make sure that everyone was still on the bus, they were happy, and the wheels weren’t falling off. I like to think that we are the partner who rides next to our executives and keeps a pulse on how the team is doing so the CEO can focus on the road ahead.
I am most proud of the people on my team and how I see them show up for their clients every day. I see them care when tough decisions have to be made, and I see them go out of their way to make sure our clients know we have their back. These are people who truly care and love what they do, but need more flexibility in their life. It’s a win-win that our clients get to benefit from their experience while not paying for a full-time hire.
What matters most to you?
I need to be growing and learning. Since going out on my own and getting exposure to so many different clients I have tripled my knowledge base and it’s constantly growing. Additionally, each new team member we add has their own experience and best practices we get to learn from. We are making each other better and faster.
Also, there’s been no greater learning experience of ’empathy’ for Founders & CEOs since becoming one myself. It’s taught me about the power, responsibility, but also vulnerability of the role, and how to support people in it better.
