Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Durigan.
Hi Becky, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was about 16 a friend of mine showed me a photoshoot she is was with a professional photographer. I had never known anyone to get professional photos like that unless they were a model. I thought ‘I want to take photos like that’! Thus began my journey from point & shoot, camera phones and finally a real camera in my early 20’s. After years of working in the professional world and juggling photography on the side – I knew owning my own business was the ultimate goal. So when Denver Photo Collective became for sale, it was a no-brainer! I had to have it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s funny how I’ve always been told owning your own business is the hardest thing ever, yet the path getting here was MUCH harder than owning the business! Now that I’m here, I look back and appreciate the struggle that helps me feel beyond prepared for running the show. But I am so glad to say, the biggest challenges seem to be behind me. As they say, ‘you can never be too prepared’. And they were right.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Denver Photo Collective?
Denver Photo Collective has always stood out to me as a studio. Through styled sets, education and the best lighting in Denver – I’ve never found anything like it. Now that I own the studio, I’ve added a few more levels of excitement. One way I do this is by offering a styled set program where photographers and other creatives can design their own sets in our studio and make money off the set they create. I help them source vendors, market and execute these events so they can have the best portfolio piece and walk away with a profit. I don’t know any other studio’s that do this and we can’t wait to open up 2022 submissions soon!
The other piece we are very proud of is having the opportunity to give back. Since owning the studio, we’ve partnered up with a non-profit called Developmental Pathways. By partnering with DP, we give the opportunity to our network of photographers to give their talent and time, photographing their events and very special families they work with. In turn, this helps marketing for DP and raise awareness for the very needed therapies they offer for people with disabilities. It’s an honor to work with them and to be able to provide a network of people willing to help!
Any big plans?
We have some big plans in the works we can’t quite disclose yet! But I will say a lot has already happened and it’s only been five months! You can expect to see the talent and network continue to build as we create some masterpieces as a community. We look forward to building this community and bringing together some of the best out there in days and months to come!
