Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Betty Yip.
Hi Dr. Yip, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Hello, my name is Dr. Betty Yip and I am passionate about kids’ smiles! Pediatric dentistry is actually my second career and I absolutely love what I do, every day. It is funny how my first career and passion, baking, led me on the unassuming path to dentistry. After graduating from Yale University, I pursued a career in culinary arts, working for top chefs and ultimately helping to open an acclaimed bakery in West Village, NYC. Working in restaurants and bakeries provided a strong hospitality background, steadfast work ethic, and “the show must go on” attitude. When making the career switch to dentistry, I took these qualities and applied it to my studies and bedside manners with patients. The path was not easy – the dental medicine courses were challenging and the relentless examinations were mentally exhausting. The skills I learned from my culinary days were easily and gladly applied to my dentist career. My patients appreciate my well-rounded, approachable personality. I explain dentistry in understandable language that is nonjudgmental and comprehensive. I also lead my staff by example with a “leaders eat last” mentality. I want the world to know that dental wellness is attainable and necessary to whole-body health and starts with small habits achievable at home.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to opening Clover Kids Dentistry has been an incredibly rewarding ride with many road bumps. It has been a completely brand-new experience that involves all the challenges of a business start-up including finding the real estate, securing finances, transforming architectural design into reality, and navigating the social media maelstrom all in the wake of COVID-19. In fact, the dentistry aspect is the easiest part! Opening a start-up is exciting because you own and execute your vision but it is also very scary and stressful. Since opening, there have been many light days with only a few patients and you wonder whether you can pay all your bills that month (staffing, rent, utilities, supplies, etc.). On the other hand, you feel grateful and take nothing for granted. You cheer with your staff when you get a call from a potential new patient. A great Google review or Facebook like will send you and your team into an excited frenzy. You go through these growing pains, the daily wins, and the bitter challenges, and you never forget “the why.” Our “why” is for Clover Kids Dentistry to be the premier dental home to help all children achieve their best oral health in the most comfortable and relaxing environment.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Clover Kids Dentistry?
The most important factor behind the success of Clover Kids Dentistry is authenticity. Our families see that Clover Kids Dentistry is nonjudgmental, realistic, and genuine when it comes to dental care, treatment, and compassion for our patients. Our mission is to provide the most comfortable dental home for our young patients and their families so they get an early start to a lifetime of healthy, bright smiles. We strive to deliver enjoyable and positive dental experiences for all who come through our doors. If parents inform us that their children are nervous or anxious about the visit or had previous unpleasant experiences, we go the extra mile to try to change that mindset. We ask the parents about their children’s hobbies, interests or favorite shows so that when they come in, we can chat with them about those topics and have their favorite show on. These thoughtful gestures make the children feel more at ease and heard. If the parents themselves confess they had previous unpleasant dental experiences, we reassure them that it is normal to have their reservations and to try their best to send good vibes to their children during their appointments. We specialize in oral conscious sedation or “twilight” dentistry that greatly help our young patients complete necessary dental treatment in a calming environment. Parents and caregivers love this treatment option because it reduces the number of potential visits, reduces time away from school and work, and keeps the patients happy!
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Prior to becoming a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist, I worked in the culinary industry as a bakery entrepreneur! People oftentimes think that being a dentist means you eschew all sugar but honestly, my dentist friends and I all have sweet teeth. At the end of the day, we are all human and love treats. However, it is absolutely paramount to exercise moderation, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste two minutes a day, floss daily, and make sure you visit the dentist every six months or more if needed.
