Hidden Gems: Meet Billie Ortega of Shades of Divine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Billie Ortega.

Hi Billie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey began with decades of corporate experience, where I developed a wide range of skills—but deep down, I always knew I was being prepared for something more. After walking through personal trials and witnessing the brokenness in others around me, I felt an undeniable pull from the Lord. It was a calling I couldn’t ignore.
Several years ago, I took a leap of faith and followed that call with unwavering obedience. I retired from my corporate employment of almost 40 years, created and opened Shades of Divine, not just as a retail space, but as a ministry disguised as a Christian bookstore and gift shoppe. My mission has always been to sow seeds of faith, love, and encouragement generously. What started as a small pop-up then storefront quickly grew into a place of refuge, prayer, and deep connection for the community.
Through Shades of Divine, I’ve had the privilege of learning and helping those in unhoused communities, connecting with local ministries, hosting prayer and community gatherings and events, and walking alongside people in every season of life. As a passionate community advocate, I believe in the power of presence—sometimes all someone needs is a listening ear, a cup of coffee, or a word of encouragement to help in the season they are in. Being present, involved, and available to serve others is at the heart of everything I do.
A little over a year ago, I closed the brick-and-mortar storefront as a response to a clear calling—to focus more intentionally on my family, deepen my impact within the community, and expand the ministry’s reach beyond physical walls. Today, Shades of Divine continues online, reaching hearts across the globe through prayer requests, faith-based subscription boxes, devotional tools, inspirational gifts, and encouraging and teaching content that helps people grow personally and in their faith.
More than offering products, my heart is to bring encouragement and hope into people’s lives—to be a faithful presence that meets them right where they are. Whether it’s celebrating their joys, praying through their trials, or simply reminding them they are deeply loved, everything I provide is rooted in a desire to uplift, inspire, and serve others in meaningful and authentic ways.
And God is still leading. He continues to open new doors and expand the vision. On the horizon is the launch of my new podcast, where I’ll share stories, testimonies, and faith-filled conversations that bring hope and healing to even more people. It’s another step in obedience and another way to reach hearts wherever they may be.
I believe encouragement is a transformative force—it heals, inspires, and empowers. That belief, combined with my love for Jesus and my passion for helping people discover their God-given purpose, is what continues to drive everything I do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road—but a deeply meaningful one.
Stepping into full-time ministry and entrepreneurship has stretched me in every possible way—spiritually, emotionally, and financially. There were moments of uncertainty, especially in the beginning, when I questioned whether I had truly heard God’s voice. Balancing the demands of running a business, caring for my family, serving others through ministry, and navigating personal challenges often felt overwhelming.
There were seasons filled with anxiety and exhaustion—times when I was pouring out more than I felt I had to give. But those were also the moments when God met me most tenderly, reminding me that His strength is made perfect in my weakness and that if He has called me to it, He will sustain me through it.
Closing the physical storefront was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make. It felt like letting go of a piece of my heart. But it was also an act of obedience—one that allowed me to focus more intentionally on my family, serve my community more deeply, expand the reach of the ministry, and continue growing into the places where God is still leading me.
The struggles continue to refine me. They deepen my faith, clarify my mission, and remind me that fruit often grows in the hidden places. The stories of those I encounter—whether filled with heartbreak or perseverance—inspire and humble me daily. Every obstacle becomes another opportunity to trust God more fully and lean into the purpose He is faithfully unfolding in my life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Shades of Divine is more than just a business—it’s a faith-centered ministry that exists to uplift, encourage, and inspire through meaningful products and heartfelt connections. We specialize in devotional tools, faith-based gifts, spiritual subscription boxes, and our signature Letters from Jesus, which offer personal, scripture-rooted encouragement written as if from the heart of Christ.
What sets us apart is the deep intentionality and prayer that goes into everything we offer. Many of our items are handcrafted by me personally or by other local artisans. I also collaborate with local and Christian authors to promote their works and share their stories, because I believe in lifting up voices that bring light, healing, and truth into the world.
We’re known for products that meet people right where they are—whether in seasons of grief, growth, celebration, or reflection. Our Letters from Jesus have especially resonated with people, becoming treasured keepsakes and timely reminders of God’s love and presence.
But more than the products we offer, our mission is about people. Shades of Divine is a place where hearts are seen, faith is nurtured, and no one walks alone. We’re here to pray with you, celebrate your joys, or simply be a listening ear during life’s hard moments. Whether through our website, social media, email, or in person at local events, we strive to make connection and encouragement accessible every day. It’s not just about what we sell—it’s about the relationships we build and the love of Christ we share through them.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of how authentically we live out our mission. We’re guided by faith, fueled by love, and centered on people over profit. A portion of our profits go back to support other ministries and charitable organizations, allowing us to extend the reach of encouragement even further. We also have a Bible ministry where anyone in need can request a Bible, and we’ll send it free of charge—because everyone deserves access to God’s Word and the hope it brings.
I want readers to know that Shades of Divine is more than a shop—it’s a ministry, a community, and a place to be encouraged. Whether you’re seeking a gift, a word of comfort, prayer, or something to deepen your walk with God, you’ll find a little piece of grace waiting for you here.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
For me, the most important characteristic has been obedience to God’s leading. Every major step I’ve taken—starting Shades of Divine, shifting direction, launching new offerings—has come from listening closely to where He’s guiding me, even when it didn’t make sense by the world’s standards. That obedience has opened doors I never could have imagined and has not only allowed me to impact lives in deeply meaningful ways, but has touched my heart and soul and filled my cup.
Beyond that, I would say compassion and authenticity have been key. I truly care about people—not just as customers, but as individuals with real stories, struggles, and dreams. I show up with my whole heart, and I think people feel that. Whether it’s through a product, a prayer, or a personal message, my goal is always to be present and encouraging in a way that reflects Christ’s love.
Staying grounded in my values, rooted in faith, and committed to encouraging others—that’s what continues to sustain and grow this ministry.
